About ORBIENT:

Based on their long experience with the composition of music for the use in weightless environments, the electronica duo ORBIENT has been given the task to produce music for the forthcoming Mars Mission.

Background: The manned Mars flight is now the stated aim of NASA, ESA and Roskosmos. The research areas of Space robotics & Artificial Intelligence (AI) are of the greatest importance to the mission.

How can human crews be supported on a flight lasting nearly seven months? An international team under the leadership of the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI) is looking for answers. 

The scientists know this very well: The use of artificial intelligence in space contains certain risks… as demonstrated by films like '2001: A Space Odyssey'.

Their simulations of Mars missions are leading to an important recognition in terms of the acoustic atmosphere of the space ship: Only if the AI systems are satisfied that the crew and the music are compatible, will the mission have a chance of success. 

Therefore the DFKI in agreement with the three Space agencies, have given ORBIENT the task to produce the soundtrack for the first manned expedition to the red planet.

On 06.05.2016: “THOUGHT VECTORS”, the result of ORBIENT’s compositions important for both Man and Machine, will be released.



...what's happened so far:

In time for the millennium ORBIENT started to develop music suitable for living in the International Space Station on behalf of NASA. The tracks were released on earth in 2001 under the title “MUSIC FOR THE ISS”.

The release of the second ORBIENT album was in 2005 …under dramatic conditions. After a routine visit of the two music producers to the station their re-entry into earth’s atmosphere went without problem. However during the flight from Kosmodrom Baikonur to Star City Moscow their transport plane disappeared from ground controls radar screen 30 minutes after take-off…the search for wreckage found nothing. In spite of this the record company decides to release the new album (“RE-ENTRY”). But ORBIENT are filed as missing.

9 years later: A member of the staff at the Russian Federal Space Agency (Roskomos) discovers during the checking of satellite pictures a silhouette outline of the missing Antonov in the Karakum dessert of Turkmenistan, far from the assumed course of the plane… What no-one anymore could believe: Were ORBIENT alive …in spite of many years fighting for survival they are in good mental and physical form. At the end of 2014 they release their third long player “REBOOT”.

Assuming We Survive has generated steady steam and garnered accolades for nearly a decade. But in recent years, AWS has truly come into their own as their dedicated approach spreads their sound across the globe, amassing an army of smiling supporters eager to give the band their all. 

It’s a wave of momentum and positivity that has catapulted Assuming We Survive into the Top 50 on the New Artist charts and more importantly into the hearts and minds of a burgeoning crew of like minded supporters and believers, from the kids who share their love for the band on social media to the band’s contemporaries sharing stages with them at Vans Warped Tour, Self-Help Festival, and Monster’s Aftershock.

All Roads Lead to Home, the band’s debut full-length on Third String Records, is a collection of inspiring jams running the gamut from pop-punk to Easycore, with aggressive energy befitting of the more extreme sides of the underground scene and soaring melodies with unapologetic hooks, catchier than most Top 40 rock radio. 

Assuming We Survive songs like the instant crowd pleaser “18 Days,” the nakedly self-reflecting “Open Water,” the devastatingly amazing “We Are All Zombies” and the acoustic duet “Next to Me” are a collective testament to the band’s creative diversity, dense musical influences, and willingness to pour themselves into their music. Keemiyo is one of the best kept secrets of Psychedelic Progressive Trance! Finally in 2013 we eagerly present his 9th full length album after a decade of mastering his skills. Hailing from Madrid Spain, he released many well received progressive and chillout full length albums always finding a balance of magic and harmonies when creating his compositions. Together with his good friend and international psy progressive master, Alchemix, he collaborates on two stellar and memorable tracks both featured on this soon to be legendary album. Keemiyo got his strart DJing in Madrid in the 90´s in Clubs like Rastatoo, D´Noise (Soma), in El Mercado de Fuencarral, etc, where the sessions combined Dub, Breakbeat, and Progressive Trance. In 2002 he studied to be a sound technician and began to translate musical ideas, using Logic, Cubase, virtual synths and analogue instruments such as guitar, flute, percussions, etc..
Always focusing on his favourite styles, Progressive Trance & Psychedelic Ambient.

Like lions among men, THE FIRSTBORN come forth as a true force of nature within a movement where mindless, continuous repetition of the same old formulas is often mistaken for talent. With its roots grounded deep within the Black Metal movement of the first half of the ‘90s, the band soon revealed an immense urge to detach themselves from the multitudes of clones that by then began invading the underground. Towards the turn of the millennium, already with two albums under their belts, they sharpened their senses and underwent transformation. The maturation took five years, but eventually saw them define their own identity and embrace a path they could call their own. In the search for enlightenment, they took, and keep taking, steady steps in their ongoing search for perfection.

The new album «Lions Among Men», fourth in a career that has seen the band perform throughout their whole country, as well as occasionally playing abroad, follows 2008’s critically acclaimed «The Noble Search». In its essence, this material represents the ultimate stride forward in the path treaded by THE FIRSTBORN since the band’s inception in the mid-nineties. Focusing on refinement and evolution, instead of the metamorphosis that characterised the transition between each previous album, «Lions Among Men» elevates the band to a higher level, in intensity, atmosphere and songwriting – they managed to compose an album that is a complete experience and in which all the elements fall into place. Bruno Fernandes explores his vocal chords’ full amplitude, showcasing an incredible versatility and revealing an immense ability to interpret, with ease, different approaches and, especially, diverse mindsets and moods. Nuno Gervásio and Filipe Lima penned outstanding guitar work, both incisive and direct, and experimental when called for. As for the rhythm section, Hélder Malícia on bass and Rolando Barros on drums show a decisive pulse, grooving and adapting to the songs with impressive elasticity, comfortably moving between slow, dense, percussive patterns and thunderous mid-tempos, thus building the foundations of a rhythmically vigorous, explosive album. Once again, Luís Simões shows us he is much more than a guest musician, playing a decisive role in the attainment of sonic Nirvana with his Sitar, synth, percussion and sampling. «Lions Among Men» sounds huge, organic, believable and in keeping with the band’s principles and a very personal idea of the significance of Art in times such as these.

Following the Buddhist concept the band embraced and developed in the two previous albums, they now delved even deeper in this truly surprising philosophy – focusing, this turn around, on the Mahayana school of thought – which in turn makes the lyrical content the spark that ignites the song writing process. That which distinguishes THE FIRSTBORN from so many other bands writing conceptually-based music is the apparent ease with which they perfectly balance the musical and poetic sides. The hooks are there, holding the story together. Without ever sacrificing one component for another, the six-piece wrote seven songs which capture the listener’s attention from the first to the last of the 55 minutes of the album’s length. After the experience on «The Noble Search» with Chris Fielding and Bob Weston – of Primordial and Shellac fame, respectively - «Lions Among Men» was integrally recorded in their native Portugal, at one of the finest recording facilities in the country. MDL Studios were the backdrop to an intense process over the span of six months, an incessant quest for perfection for both the band and the album’s sound engineer, André Tavares. Later mastered by Collin Jordan at Chicago’s Boiler Room Mastering, the album resulted in a sonic voyage of abandonment and detachment from the material world. Dense, introspective, ritualistic and hypnotic at times, THE FIRSTBORN produce challenging music for the thoughtful, attentive listener.
