At the age of 12 years old, Michael Franti passed his favourite guitar to KAI-FI (Kaia Walton) and told him to "go practice." Since then, he has grown his musical interests (soul, funk, blues, hip hop, electro, lo-fi, Pacific rhythms, and film scoring) and woven them into his own evolving sound that is both soulful and cinematic. KAI-FI's artistic journey took a significant leap when he had the opportunity to work with established recording artists such as AKIL the MC from Jurassic 5.

In addition to his collaborations, KAI-FI's musical prowess was recognised when he became a youth finalist at the Mullum Music Festival in 2019. Remarkably, at just 16 years of age, he achieved the distinction of being the youngest-ever finalist and the sole producer featured in Brisbane City Council's The QUBE Effect 2020. This showcases not only his talent but also his unique ability to blend genres and create a musical experience that transcends conventional boundaries.

KAI-FI's formative years in the industry were shaped by the guidance of the late Stu Fergie, a mentor from the esteemed indigenous dub group, Oka. Under Stu Fergie's influence, KAI-FI's musical journey flourished, laying the foundation for his future collaborations and ventures with renowned artists in the industry.
