Way back in the day In large ports in Britain and the Barbary coast of California, Ships would need sailors. And instead of asking, many just went to the local bar or pub and just kidnapped the drunks. On the next day they would wake up on board a ship and on their way to wherever.  This is a story of a Shanghai sailor {or crimp} who oversees the kidnapping of unsuspecting revelers.

Recruit the sailors and anchor's aweigh
They're back at the wall where the ceiling drips
Another pint to wet their whistle
And the shanghai crew will drag them to the ship 

I'm not a pirate but family man
A couple kids and a loving wife
Seems a thousand years ago
The sea had given me a sailor's life
The wind at gale drop the sail before we drown
No one goes home if this ship goes down

Nearby a harbor and the water calms
Dropping anchor wait out the storm from there
On the nearby rocks there be a wreck
Hardened sailors pause their work and stare

Back home I'm just a family man
Two hungry kids and an aging wife
But saltwater's in my veins
This sailor lives sailor's life
You volunteered or perhaps by chance
So shake a leg you got a ticket to the dance

The work is hard the nights are long
Time to think when the winds won't blow
So far from family and my home
Why I'm out here they may never know
