I’ve been meaning to make this mix for a really long time and whilst I know it won’t be to everybody’s taste, I wanted to showcase some of my favourites tracks from when I first began DJ’ing way back in 2002! I wanted to be able to show people where my love for music started and where for me, it all began.

You may or may not know that when I first started buying vinyl’s and learning to DJ I fell in love with Speed Garage, Bassline House, Funky House and UK Garage - a music genre/scene that dominated Birmingham (my hometown) at the time. 

I started out with some not-so-tight Numark belt drive decks and slowly began teaching myself the art of DJ’ing. When I say slowly, I mean slowly... For a short time I wasn’t even aware that I had to adjust tempo’s to mix a track and it’s safe to say my first couple of weeks practising didn’t sound too great! Fast forward twelve or so years, I’m now living my dream as a DJ! 

I had SO much fun making this mix. It was both an amazing trip down memory lane and a pleasant surprise to realise that I sometimes drop a few tracks in my set now that I played allllllll those years ago! 

I have absolutely no idea if this type of music was being played in your city/scene, wherever that may be around the world, however it’d be interesting to know... What I do know is that these Speed Garage / Bassline vibes were massive in the likes of Birmingham (UK) and Sheffield (UK) in the early 2000’s - if you were a part of the scene back in the day, you need no introduction! 

This two-hour mix consists of 31 tracks that range in release year from 1996 to 2005. These 120 minutes are my ROOTS...

Depeche Mode - In Your Memory (1980-1990 Mega-Mix 12" Vinyl)

Musique d’ameublement sometimes is also translated to "furnishing music". It's a term made up by Erik Satie for three his own music sets, which content originally suppose to create an ambient for sitters and talkers. However, the legend says music was so touching and alluring, that the ones who experienced it, could do nothing but listen. Although back in the days it was meant to be played for groups, my personal preferences suggests consuming it individually.

Dip your toes dancing into the funk, disco, and pop sounds of 1980’s Philippines. With influences being drawn from jazz, Latin fusion, bossa nova, 70s American pop, disco, and indigenous folk, two main genres spawned to cover the ballooning number of popular dance music styles hitting the radio - Manila Sound and it’s successor, OPM (Original Philippines Music). 
Manila Sound, pioneered in part by the popular pop/disco band Hotdog, repopularised the use of local Tagalog language over English productions with their catchy melodies and soft fusion of disco, jazz, and funk. Following this, much of Manila Sound and OPM began to write in ‘Taglish’, a mixing of English and Tagalog. "Hotdog, with Ella Del Rosario's beautifully angelic voice streaming through the airwaves during the clangs of martial law, immediately killed colonial mentality in pop music with its phenomenal original music. Influenced largely by Ella's regal societal class and beauty, gated palatial upbringing, her Spanish-American roots, her uniquely tonal and sweetly charming international accent, combined with her private school upbringing, a magnetic charm, affluent mannerisms and English-speaking mannerisms, suddenly it was cool to talk Taglish and listen to a Pinoy pop band.” (Baby Gil, Philippine Star). OPM, the successor Manilla sound, devoted itself moreso to pop music and ballads than the disco and funk scene of its forerunner. It’s important to note that while this genre was drawing crowds, a huge underground scene of Filipino folk-rock, protest music, new wave, and punk rock was also gaining traction. Maybe that’s one for the next mix.
