THIS WEEK'S SHOW: Reel movie talk-- for real! 

"Film is forever," goes the old saying. Except that it isn't. Even 50 years ago, a huge chunk of early Hollywood movies were already gone, thanks to neglect and trashing of reels, and with each passing year, celluloid loses ground to its biggest enemy: time. 

FILM IS DEAD. LONG LIVE FILM! documents the slow fate of film and the efforts of a small-but-vital community of collectors and enthusiasts who have put in decades of effort to rescue, preserve and share as many celluloid stories as they can, whether it's 35mm and 16mm features, Super-8 home movies or rare formats. Joining us is its producer/director, Peter Flynn.

THIS WEEK'S SHOW: Two new to Blu (-ray)!

Thelma is a 93-year-old woman who, one day, gets telephone-scammed by someone pretending to be her grandson in need of $10,000-- and there's no way she's gonna take that nonsense lying down! Similarly-aged Oscar-winning actor June Squibb chats with us about becoming an unlikely action star, and writer/director Josh Margolin also fills us in on THELMA-- incredibly, based on a real person!  

Set in 2008 during the last month of summer before high school begins, DIDI shows us an impressionable 13-year-old Taiwanese-American boy navigating the awkward, unknown landscape of teenhood, with the added toxic aspects of male peers and racism. Writer/director Sean Wang and Oscar nominee Joan Chen discuss the drama and cringe comedy of post-adolescent life in the semi-autobiographical DIDI.

From 1999: In Tim Burton’s suspenseful and sweeping tale SLEEPY HOLLOW, Johnny Depp stars as Ichabod Crane, an eccentric and earnest constable with an avant-garde approach to solving crime. Ichabod’s investigative ways are put to the test when his superiors send him to the small village of Sleepy Hollow to probe a string of murders, allegedly committed by a HEADLESS HORSEMAN! 2024 marks the 25th anniversary of the film, so, we dust off our sit-down with actor Johnny Depp!  

KNEECAP is the real-life story of three directionless young men from West Belfast who form a rap group (dubbed KNEECAP) and become unlikely figureheads for the civil rights movement to save the Irish language. In this fiercely original sex, drugs and hip-hop biopic, KNEECAP play themselves, laying down a global rallying cry for the defense of native cultures. We sit down with rappers/actors Móglaí Bap (Naoise) & DJ "JJ" Próvai and director Rich Peppiatt.

THIS WEEK'S SHOW:  The truth is in there, somewhere.

A successful and respected television documentary journalist is forced to confront a dark incident from her past when she appears in a novel written by the father of a boy she let drown 20 years earlier. DISCLAIMER* is a 7-episode limited miniseries written and directed by our first guest, Alfonso Cuarón [ROMA; GRAVITY; CHILDREN OF MEN].

Now on Blu-ray:  Max is a 25-year-old aspiring novelist, living in London and paying his dues working as a freelance escort under the pseudonym Sebastian and using his experiences to fuel his stories. What begins as a few furtive meetings soon becomes a nocturnal double life. SEBASTIAN is the film  and zooming in are writer/director Mikko Mäkelä (A MOMENT IN THE REEDS) and actor Ruaridh Mollica.

THIS WEEK'S SHOW:  Dreams... non-celluloid ones.

Anora is a Brooklyn erotic dancer/sex worker who, one day, meets the childish son of a Russian oligarch and marries him with fairy tale impulsiveness. But then, his parents fly to New York, hellbent on putting an end to the dream. ANORA is the latest film from Sean Baker (TANGERINE, THE FLORIDA PROJECT),  and we're joined by  breakout lead actor Mikey Madison.

Now on Blu-ray:  A 21-year-old construction worker in New Mexico working odd jobs to get by. When he takes a job at a ranch, he finds welcomed by a vibrant community of queer rodeo riders exploring their own conception of the American dream. NATIONAL ANTHEM is directed and co-written by Luke Gilford and follows on from his 2020 biograph of the same name, comprising photographs documenting the queer rodeo subculture.

Remember Y2K-- the event that wasn't? In 1999, programmers across the globe scrambled to update systems to avoid a mass crash when clocks hit the new millennium. In the retro-teen comedy-with-horror Y2K, two nobodies crash a big NYE party and... things don't go the way they did in reality! With us are first-time director Kyle Mooney (SNL; BRIGSBY BEAR) and producer Evan Winter-- both also co-writers.

From 2020: Based on Peter Carey's novel, the almost-assuredly-true tale of one of Australia's most notorious figures is spun in TRUE HISTORY OF THE KELLY GANG, a fictionalized account of the famed 19th century Australian Bush Ranger/bandit Ned Kelly. With his new film THE ORDER in theaters, we return Down Under for our 2020 chat with director Justin Kurzel (MACBETH; ASSASSIN'S CREED).
