6/17/21 --  THIS WEEK'S CELLULOID DREAMS THE MOVIE SHOW: A timely 25th Anniversary interview from the vault.

2001's SPRING FORWARD introduces us to two Parks and Recreation workers: a young recent ex-con, angry at the world but aware of having gotten a second chance and an easygoing older man who is kind, compassionate and whose son is dying. Opposites in many ways, the two form a connection and share conversations about love, karma and the things that make up a life. In the role of the older family man is Ned Beatty, whose long career includes some of the movies' best moments, from his feature debut in DELIVERANCE to memorable roles in NETWORK, SUPERMAN: THE MOVIE, ROSEANNE, CHARLIE WILSON'S WAR and BACK TO SCHOOL, among others. We remember the late character actor, who discusses SPRING FORWARD and, happily, the role that brought happiness to countless kids: Lex Luthor's bumbling henchman, Otis.

THIS WEEK'S SHOW: Scares, romance and drama! We got it all!

A teenager moves with her father to the quiet town of Kettle Springs, Missouri, hoping for a fresh start. Instead, she discovers a fractured community that has fallen on hard times, and amidst boiling tensions, a sinister, grinning figure emerges from the cornfields to cleanse the town of its burdens, one bloody victim at a time. Teen rebellion meets killer clown vengeance in CLOWN IN A CORNFIELD is an adaptation of the YA novel by Adam Cesare, who joins us along with director/co-screenwriter Eli Craig (TUCKER & DALE VS. EVIL).

In JANE AUSTEN WRECKED MY LIFE, a hopelessly clumsy yet charming young woman who works in the legendary Shakespeare & Co. bookshop in Paris and desperately single, dreams of being a successful writer, and of experiencing love akin to a Jane Austen novel. We chat with writer/ director Laura Piani about her creative process, the feminist questions at the heart of the story, and why sometimes the best way to honor a literary icon is to challenge her. 

From 2018:  Inspired by movies, four young men attempted a heist that was at once audacious and unusual. AMERICAN ANIMALS is the equally-original cinematic hybrid of narrative and documentary that tells this wildly-true story. We pop back into the archive for our chat with writer/director Bart Layton (THE IMPOSTER), which has never been rebroadcast!

An acclaimed philosophy professor joins a small college, intriguing students but revealing a morbid outlook on life. Despite becoming involved with another teacher and a precocious student, it's only after he commits an existential act that he begins to see the world as a more positive place. Ten years ago, we sat down with Parker Posey-- the "queen of the Indies" in the '90s and currently seen in THE WHITE LOTUS-- to talk about Woody Allen's murder comedy IRRATIONAL MAN.  

In 1947, Dalton Trumbo was an Academy Award-winning screenwriter, and also a member of the Communist party. In the face of the Communist witch hunts in the 1940s and 1950s, he was arrested for his views, becoming one of the blacklisted writers dubbed the "Hollywood 10" and ultimately emerging as a true American patriot in his efforts to defend the First Amendment and by extension, freedom of speech. We joined up with director Jay Roach (the AUSTIN POWERS series) TRUMBO.

What started as a story about an unsanctioned mission to rescue 25 stray cats from the streets of Qatar (where cats equal the entire country's human population!) turned into a meditation on compassion, identity, and belonging. Filmmaker Mye Hoang takes us behind the scenes of her moving documentary 25 CATS FROM QATAR, sharing what it taught her — about animals, people, and the power of small acts of care and kindness.

From 2002: A chauffeur is sent to retrieve some items when his millionaire boss is hospitalized from an accident. But when he tries on his man's prized tuxedo, he discovers the suit contains some fantastic gadgets and abilities and finds himself caught up in international intrigue and espionage. THE TUXEDO is the movie and its star: actor and martial arts icon Jackie Chan-- now on screens in KARATE KID: LEGENDS-- who discusses his school training, singing and dancing for James Brown, being not Bruce Lee, the hole in his head, and how he fortuitously avoided being caught in the 9/11 attack.

Following a series of gay teen suicides, a deeply closeted filmmaker turns the camera on himself to document his coming out and search for self-acceptance and community. COMING OUT is the documentary, and Alden Peters is the subject (and also the director).

PLAINCLOTHES is an intense, deeply atmospheric drama that explores the grey zones of authority, identity and the cost of living a secret life. We sit down with its writer/ director Carmen Emmi.

HEIGHTENED SCRUTINY follows the courtroom battles of civil rights lawyer Chase Strangio as he fights to overturn Tennessee's ban on gender-affirming care for transgender youth while simultaneously confronting the media narratives influencing public perception of trans rights. Zooming in to discuss the film (just days ahead of the case's verdict) are director Sam Feder (DISCLOSURE) & producer Amy Scholder.
