A closeted undercover cop, assigned to arrest men cruising in shopping mall bathrooms, grapples with messy, conflicted feelings when he falls in love with a married man he's assigned to entrap. PLAINCLOTHES is an intense, deeply atmospheric drama that explores the grey zones of authority, identity and the cost of living a secret life. We sit down with its writer/ director Carmen Emmi.

HEIGHTENED SCRUTINY follows the courtroom battles of civil rights lawyer Chase Strangio as he fights to overturn Tennessee's ban on gender-affirming care for transgender youth while simultaneously confronting the media narratives influencing public perception of trans rights. Zooming in to discuss the film (just days ahead of the case's verdict) are director Sam Feder (DISCLOSURE) & producer Amy Scholder.

THIS WEEK'S SHOW:  We get lost and then shoot our way out of our vast archive with two from 2017!

Director/screenwriter James Gray (WE OWN THE NIGHT; AD ASTRA) tells the adventurous true tale of British explorer Col. Percival Fawcett who disappeared during multiple searches for a mysterious city in the Amazon at the dawn of the 20th century, discovering evidence of a previously unknown, advanced civilization. It's THE LOST CITY OF Z.  

It's "all guns, no control" when two gangs meet in a Boston warehouse to broker an arms deal amidst confusion, the wrong weapons and a ridiculous amount of bullets in the '70s thriller FREE FIRE, and actor Sharlto Copley (DISTRICT 9; CHAPPIE) gives us the deets!

Mills talks about adapting Walter Kirns' novel and his love of art films, and lead actor Lou Pucci discusses meeting Kirns and the usefulness of sucking his thumb in public.

THIS WEEK'S SHOW:  Summer Pride ain't over yet!

From 2002:  They began as a flamboyant ragtag troupe of genderbending hippies in 1969 San Francisco. But that New Year's Eve, they gave a performance for the ages, and the outrageous and highly-original drag legend named The Cockettes was born. More than 30 years later, the documentary THE COCKETTES captured their story, told by surviving members and a reminisce by John Waters. We chatted with directors Bill Weber & David Weissman.  

From 2015:  A misanthropic lesbian, fresh off a breakup with her girlfriend, has her world disrupted by the unexpected arrival of her pregnant teen granddaughter needing financial help. But Grandma is broke, so the women hop in the car and take a ride, knocking on the doors of old friends and flames and stirring up memories in GRANDMA, and we sat with star Lily Tomlin and writer/director Paul Weitz (ABOUT A BOY).

THIS WEEK'S SHOW: Something for everyone!

On her broken-down ranch, a young tattooed and recently-widowed horse trainer struggles with providing refuge for a small group of wayward teens while trying to manage finances and her own grief. EAST OF WALL is an authentic portrait of female resilience in the "New West" inspired and played by the women and girls who live it. Zooming in is writer/ director Kate Beecroft.

From 2020: Two couples nab the perfect oceanside rental house for a weekend getaway... until they discover something sinister, which exposes some well-kept secrets about each other. THE RENTAL is the directorial debut of Dave Franco (THE DISASTER ARTIST) which made a splash at drive-in theaters during the first Summer of COVID-19, and Dave joined us on the line!  

From 2009: TAKING WOODSTOCK dramatizes the true account of a young man in 1969 who, while working at his parents' New York motel, inadvertently helped the Woodstock festival happen. We sat down for a short chat with lead actor and stand-up comedian Demetri Martin.

Now in its 5th year, SF QUEER FILM FEST provides an inclusive platform for LGBTQ+ filmmakers to share bold, innovative and authentic stories by showcasing films by local and international filmmakers (along with on-stage Q&As). Their goal is to foster a creative space where filmmakers are celebrated for their unique perspectives regardless of premier status, budget or industry connections. With us once again is Director of Programming Kevin M. Thomas.
