THIS WEEK'S SHOW:  Quiet White people in Florida??

THE QUIET ONES dramatizes a 2008 heist-- the biggest and most spectacular in Danish history-- by a multinational group of ambitious criminals, led by a struggling boxer willing to risk losing his family and everything that matters to him. Zooming in with us is director Frederik Louis Hviid.

From 2017:  In a budget motel near Disney World, the sometimes-disruptive behavior of a resident 6-year-old causes concern for her single mother and the sympathetic motel manager. Director/co-writer Sean Baker (TANGERINE & current Academy Award nominee for ANORA) takes us into THE FLORIDA PROJECT.  

From 2014:  The racial satire DEAR WHITE PEOPLE follows the stories of four black students at an Ivy League college where controversy breaks out over a popular but offensive Black-face party thrown by White students. It also became a hit Netflix series, and we chat about the film with its writer/director, Justin Simien (BAD HAIR).

THIS WEEK'S SHOW:  Guess who's 60? (No, it's not us!)

In a year of pretty notable anniversaries, the venerable and beloved THE SOUND OF MUSIC is celebrating its 60th in 2025, and somehow looking (and sounding) even better with each passing year! Well... our first guest knows a thing or two about that. As this classic gets a new 4K blu-ray this week, we welcome back film historian and preservationist Mike Matessino, whose extensive history with the film includes restoring the complete soundtrack for the Super Deluxe 5-CD set in 2023 and directing the definitive documentary THE SOUND OF MUSIC: FROM FACT TO PHENOMENON.

THE SUMMER BOOK is a lyrical adaptation of Tove Jansson's novel set on a remote Finnish island and which follows a grandmother, her young granddaughter and a father as they spend a season together navigating grief, memory and the quiet beauty of everyday life. Director Charlie McDowell (THE ONE I LOVE; WINDFALL) joins us to chat about his idyllic and wistful drama-- a tale of love, loss and the fragile bond between generations.

PLAINCLOTHES is an intense, deeply atmospheric drama that explores the grey zones of authority, identity and the cost of living a secret life. We sit down with its writer/ director Carmen Emmi.  

From 2021: In the meditative supernatural drama NINE DAYS, a mysterious man interviews five unborn souls to determine which one can be given life on Earth. But one free-spirited candidate causes him to face his own existential challenge by looking within. We connect with writer/director Edson Oda for a hardly-remote conversation.

In his book SHOCK VALUE: HOW A FEW ECCENTRIC OUTSIDERS GAVE US NIGHTMARES, CONQUERED HOLLYWOOD, AND INVENTED MODERN HORROR, author Jason Zinoman focuses on the influence of a handful of directors (Wes Craven, John Carpenter, Tobe Hooper, etc.) whose groundbreaking efforts created a wildly-successful industry.  

From 2012:  MACHINE GUN PREACHER tells the hardcore and inspirational true story of Sam Childers, a former drug-dealing criminal who undergoes an astonishing transformation and finds his unexpected calling as the savior of hundreds of children in war-torn Sudan. hard-hitting and moving story of violence, redemption and the lengths to which a person will go in combatting an almost-unthinkable evil. We sat down with actors Gerard Butler & Michelle Monaghan.

Molina, a gay hairdresser in 1983 is serving time in an Argentine prison for alleged indecency when he is joined with Valentin, a political prisoner, and the two form an unlikely bond punctuated with Molina's imaginary movies starring a classic screen actress.

KISS OF THE SPIDER WOMAN was a 1985 drama that became a Broadway musical, which is now a film again. Director Bill Condon (GODS AND MONSTERS, CHICAGO) and lead actor Tonatiuh sit down with us to discuss their haunting, sensual and deeply human story that blurs the line between fantasy and reality.

From 2003:  Five youths pick up a traumatized hitchhiker in the Texas backwoods and when she suddenly shoots herself, the group goes in search of help. Unfortunately, the remote house they discover is filled with a family of inbred psychopaths and in short order, they are pursued by a relentless chainsaw-wielding cannibal. Sound familiar? Of course it does! THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE (2003) is considered one of the quality horror remakes, and we open the scary archives to revisit our chat with German director Marcus Nispel on his feature debut.
