Stoen the Stoner

This is another song for my project on Minnesota's labor history. This song is about the IWW organizer, Frank Little, who was murdered by bosses in Butte Montana in 1917. A few years prior, in 1913, Frank was in Duluth helping out with a strike by workers on the ore docks who had walked out in response to extremely dangerous work conditions and the death of two ore punchers- men whose job was to break frozen ore loose from train cars in order to load onto the ships. The Finnish community was heavily represented in the strike and in Duluth-area IWW activity in general during this time, and the Finnish Socialist Federation experienced internal splits during and after the strike due to the embrace of direct action and syndicalist direction by many of the workers in the upper Midwest, in opposition to the more moderate majority of the federation. The more radical Finns became the backbone of the local IWW and later a major force in the Communist Party, and published the Finnish IWW newspaper Industrialisti out of Duluth until 1975. 

During the strike, Frank Little was kidnapped by company thugs and held in a barn, where they presumably intended to eventually murder and disappear him. His location was discovered by the workers on the strike, who formed up a crew and rescued him, proving the importance of community self defense as part of labor organizing in times when the capitalist class is willing to organize direct repression of workers and organizers. 

The 1913 strike, like most of the IWW strikes in Minnesota during the 1910s, was ultimately unsuccessful in the face of intense repression and the enormous resources of Minnesota's extractive capitalists, but laid the groundwork for later successes by the CIO, AFL, and Independent Union of All Workers.

The cops’d been beatin’ the crowds at the docks
The goons beat on Frank and put him under lock

The bosses had Frank and we knew what they’d do
the union looked up and the union looked down
We found Frank in the farm forty miles from town
So we formed up a posse, we circled the farm
We told the kidnappers if Frank came to harm
What you do to him, we will do it to you
So they gave up our man, he rode back to Duluth

There were three thousand workers to welcome Frank back
And he spoke on the goons and the police attacks 
We rescued our man, but the boss beat the strike
We grew and we learned someday we’ll be ripe
And big Frank Little went on for the cause
Stood up to the goons, stood up the law 
‘Til he bosses in Butte hanged him from a bridge
But I’ll never stop fightin’ ‘cause Frank never did
