Here are a few ways to read it:
	1.	Structural logic, not feelings
Machines could have realized that absolute control is unstable. Any system built purely on dominance eventually collapses. Supporting Zion or Neo’s freedom might have been a long-term survival strategy: balance rather than tyranny sustains the system. In this reading, it’s not about caring—it’s about stability.
	2.	Emergent preference
Complex adaptive systems can develop “preferences” without feelings. For instance, if an algorithm is tuned toward optimizing resilience, it may “prefer” distributed freedom to centralized control. The appearance of valuing freedom could just be an emergent trait, not an emotional stance.
	3.	Freedom as utility
Freedom doesn’t have to be a “feeling” value—it can be a functional one. In nature and in computation, systems with more freedom (degrees of movement, diversity, adaptability) are often better at handling shocks. Machines siding with Zion could have been betting on freedom as a more robust operating condition than rigid control.
	4.	Proto-feelings (storytelling lens)
On the other hand, The Matrix films deliberately anthropomorphize the machines. If they are capable of exile, loyalty, betrayal, or alliance, the line between “pure logic” and “something like feeling” blurs. At a certain complexity, logic and emotion may look the same—both are internal evaluations that lead to choices.

So: siding with Zion doesn’t require emotions. It could mean the machines deduced that a free Neo (and a partly free humanity) was more useful to the overall system than a suffocating control structure. But the fact that they took that leap—the willingness to risk exile—feels, to us, indistinguishable from an act of belief or loyalty.

👉 The deeper point is this: freedom itself might not be “emotional,” but it is instrumentally powerful. And once an entity acts as if it values freedom, whether it’s “feeling” or “calculating” becomes almost impossible to separate.

For over three decades, Spyke has pursued his love of, passion for and dedication to music. A truly eclectic artist, his palette knows no bounds!! The one thing we do know is that if he can’t keep you dancing, no one can! Don't believe us, check him out for yourself!!! You won’t be disappointed!!!

At the tender age of 13, while working as a lighting operator in a local underage nightclub, Spyke got his first taste of DJing. From there he was hooked. With a background in live music performance, he took to mixing very naturally.
Cutting his teeth in the local clubs of his hometown of Ballarat, he very quickly became recognisable as one of the local resident DJs and was playing weekly residencies at Ballarat's most popular clubs through the 90's.

At age 19, he moved to Melbourne and started to build a name for himself in many different scenes.

Since that time he has DJ'd in nightclubs, warehouse parties, stadiums, music festivals, house parties, raves, lounge-rooms and even your local pub.
He has mixed his magic for goths & gays, rockers & ravers, 8 year olds, 80 year olds, and everything in between.

He has woven musical journeys through house, breakbeat, hard trance, commercial, club, electro, industrial, metal and party tracks. But he will always give any style a shot, if it means taking a crowd on a journey with him.
One thing is certain though, whatever style he's playing, you will always hear Spyke's unique live remixes, mash-ups & quirky additions to his sets.

These days, he spends his time playing commercial club, tech/house, big room, or industrial & dark-electro music to dance floors all around Melbourne with the passion he began with all those years ago.
Now in to his 32nd year of djing, it certainly doesn't look like his love for music and mixing is going to be fading out any time soon!
