Jacobus Derwort started exploring sonic soundscapes listening to his short-wave world receiver at the age of 12. There he would hear music from Africa, China, Japan, Indonesia, South America and beyond. He started playing guitar, piano, percussion and saxophone.

He met Hanyo van Oosterom in 1978 and they started the legendary cult rock band, 'The Jones'. Derwort was playing the sax, van Oosterom the drums. They started conducting sound experiments in Hanyo’s small cellar in the Dutch village of Krimpen aan den IJssel.

In the early eighties they made their first cassette, 'The Kallikatsou'. Hanyo started the ambient collective CHI in 1983. Jacobus was the first musician to join CHI. Together, they went to the magic rock “The 

Kallikatsou” on the island of Patmos, Greece. Here, Hanyo had stayed for months in a cave for some deep soul-searching. He heard the sound of CHI in the silence of the night like a message from out of space. Being together at the Kallikatsou they shaped the foundation of CHI, making handmade flutes from local bamboo and conducting field recordings of 
water, crickets, owls, goats, wind, etc...

Back home they asked Willem Cramer to join CHI, and later Michel Banabila. They released a legendary ambient cassette, 'The Original Recordings', in 1983 which soon became a collectors item. CHI stopped in 1987 (and still now nobody knows exactly why). Willem Cramer and Michel Banabila started the world music collective 'East Meets West' in 1989. Hanyo and Jacobus kept recording ambient soundscapes.

Jacobus was working on his 'Bamboo' recordings. Hanyo recorded the first tracks for 'The Kallikatsou Experience'.  Neither album was ever released. They returned a few times together to The Kallikatsou, but there the history seems to end...

…until decades later when Astral Industries located them after a long search, inspired by Rod Modell (Deepchord). The result was the vinyl release of CHI – The Original Recordings in February 2016. The album received great reviews and sold out in a few weeks. 

This inspired Hanyo and Jacobus to work on an old plan: remixing the old bamboo recordings. Most tracks were made in the eighties before and after CHI. Original tape recordings using mainly analogue sounds, percussion, samples and (of course)bamboo flutes and manipulated clarinets. Hanyo added some new recordings and remixed the old tapes in his Numoonlab Studio in Rotterdam. The result was 'The Bamboo Recordings', a timeless collection of ambient soundscapes. 

THE CHI FACTORY is the next step of CHI into the future. It will involve many future ambient collaborations. The next release will be 'The Kallikatsou Recordings'(Astral Industries 2016 TBA). Also bringing back the original line-up of CHI for new recordings is part of the plan. Who knows what may happen next.

"On this 6-track album, the musical world of Golden Ivy comes full circle as he introduces these seemingly different elements to each other. On one hand, there is the cold precision of programmed rhythms pulsing through the base layers: echoes of the urban industrial cityscape in which it functions. On the other hand, the sliding howls across the strings of the violin reaches much further out into the wilderness. And still - melded together - they manage to convey a feeling of “home”.

Taking inspiration from the fourth world concept of Jon Hassel, Ivar finds a delicate path where influences of folk music from various cultures can be captured and contained within a modern frame of mind. The violin and flute are present throughout the album like a red thread. Perhaps they are the perfect instruments to capture the melancholy, isolation and beauty of being alone with nature, and of being home in oneself.

But there’s also Ivars jovial sense of humour that peers through, for instance on the pirate fantasy of “Long John Silver” or the jittery bounce of “Game Vän”. Oddball touches of lefthanded debauchery pass by here and there, but the focus remains on simplicity and repetition. The compositions are focused and tightly harnessed to the rhythms which carry them. "

We're very honoured to welcome Paris based DJ & Producer D.K (@d-k-music) into our family ashram.

Some of you may know him via his previous releases on Antinote, Jonny Nash's label 'Melody of Truth' or more recently his split EP via Second Circle.

He's also the melodic mystery man behind those jacking 45 ACP releases via dear brother Ron Morelli. 

Though here on this 38 minute cassette, aptly titled 'The Goddess is Dancing', D.K. delves back into his ancestral Vietnamese past & blesses us all with 6 originally composed tracks that pay homage to the mysterious shamanistic dance of 'Hau Dong'.

As explained by D.K. here....

"This tape is an imaginary interpretation of the music used in Vietnam’s ancestral/spiritual possession rituals called 'Hau Dong'. It’s a ceremony in 5 parts, whereby spirit mediums dance on each song to honor the mystical goddesses of Forest, Water and Heaven. Whilst dancing during these rituals, the Medium's appear to transform themselves into different characters....changing their personalities, as if various spirits have entered their bodies."

Last year Into The Light delved deep into the unreleased archives of Free Level, a collaborative project between Greek composers George Theodorakis and the late Petros Skoutaris. Now the label presents a blissfully sunny and gorgeously life-affirming EP of rare solo tracks from Skoutaris that were recently discovered on a forgotten CD-R.

Petros Skoutaris first rose to prominence in 1981 when the band he formed, new wave and ska fusionists Sharp Ties, sold 50,000 copies of their debut album “Get That Beat” on the back of the title track becoming a hit single all over Europe. A year later he quit the band, re-emerging in 1984 as the co-owner of now legendary Athens nightclub “Graffiti’’. Up until his unexpected death in 2004, Skoutaris appeared as a guest guitarist on a wide range of records – Pavlos Sidiropoulos’ classic album “Zorba The Freak” included, while also pursuing collaborative projects such as 667, Dubient and Free Level.

The tracks featured on this posthumous solo release were recorded in 2000 and were originally intended to appear on an album that never materialized. They offer a neat snapshot of Skoutaris’ chameleon-like musical nature and the layered melodic intricacy of his trademark guitar playing. This latter feature is particularly evident on “Tropika”, a dreamy but up-tempo affair that sits somewhere between Pat Metheny’s breeziest moments and mid-1980s alternative synth-pop, and the becalmed, Flamenco-influenced sunset bliss of “Attica”. 

Skoutaris’ life-long love affair with reggae culture comes to the fore on the two-part “Yusurum”, a wonderfully intoxicating, NYC dub-funk influenced affair that was written, arranged and co-performed by his friend and fellow Athens synth-wave scene survivor Manos Skaramagkas. Like Bill Laswell’s work as Material, both versions of “Yusurum” incorporate extensive use of Indian style percussion and instrumentation, as well as hallucinatory effects and some of the warmest, weightiest bass known to humankind. It’s a mind-altering trip from an overlooked, little-known Greek master and his equally talented mate.

Getting lost is an art. Losing oneself among the winding streets of an unexplored town or losing oneself to an overwhelming sensation requires one to let go. To forget. To not look forward. To not seek. To not pay attention. To stop time. To disappear. For a music lover, getting lost in the music is a sacred ritual; it's a conjuring tricking that pushes the listener from their listening chair and into the universe created by the artist. 
Bas Grossfeldt's Lost in Sensation is perfectly named: you start the track in a listening chair, with pads, percussion, and other elements softly flowing into your ears and then…woosh…elements disappear…your chair - gone…your stereo - kaput..your ears - cant feel them. You will just find yourself floating, along with the music, blissfully lost. Yes, it's that kind of a track. Give it a whirl but don’t schedule anything after the track: you wont make it. Expect to be lost and expect to enjoy the disappearance.
