Hidden in the Sand

You find yourself in an old abandoned diner. One fluorescent light flickers at the far side. You see your mother on the right and your father on the left. “What are you guys doing here?” Your parents start crying. Your father removes your birth certificate from his breast pocket. Your mother takes out your social security card. They both remove zippo lighters from their pants pockets. “What will prove that I exist? What will prove that I exist?” Your parents light the papers and a strong grizzled hand clasps your shoulder firmly. “Only your pay stubs. Get back to work.” The lights flick on. The oven heats up. The door flings open. The lunch rush. Get back to work.
