A second exercise in percussion using clocked random gates. The Zlob Modular Dual VCO serves as the master clock, patched to Synthetic Sound Labs V-Gates and CuteLab Missed Opportunities, both of which provide related but unquantized gates that clock and trigger several modules.

A two layer granular drone made with a Tasty Chips GR-Mega, with chords sourced from a Elektron Analog Four mkII.

Recorded through an Arturia AudioFuse Studio interface into Adobe Audition in 32 bit 96kHz, and processed with equalization and compression. No effects applied post-recording. Rendered for distribution at 24 bit 48kHz.

This track was inspired by "Sir Gawain and the Green Knight" as translated by Simon Armitage. There are beautifully written passages describing Gawain's lonely journey through the a wintry northern landscape:
"...clouds shed their cargo of crystallised rain which froze as it fell to the frost-glazed earth. With nerves frozen numb he napped in his armour; bivouacked in the blackness amongst bare rocks where melt-water streamed from the snow-capped summits and high overhead hung chandeliers of ice."

Northern Climes

On my travels this summer I picked up a book of weird celtic short stories, published by The British Library. This one is inspired by "The Fetch" written by Robert Aickman. The fetch is essentially your own personal sea-hag who will come for you (or those in your family circle) when your time is up. You know it's come for you when it looks you in the face; otherwise, it will pass you, it's head at whatever angle so as not to look at you, as it makes its way to the true victim. Aickman's stoic, Scottish style brings out the folk dimensions of the tale to truly horrific effect. Not surprisingly, I've gone for a funereal march!

The shrill "celtic" fife is played on a Fender telecaster with an e-bow and then speeded several times!

Stay beneath the moss

"The Cure" was written by Dorothy K Haynes in 1969. She was an accomplished Scottish writer of horror stories, often included in compendiums. I read this recently in a collection re-printed by the British Library. Yes, it's another dark offering. The story is tragic, horrifying but, ultimately, hopeful - well worth a read. 

I used a Fender Jazz Bass, through a modern amp, to join the lead synth.
