Yanyan Kole is a traditional Balafon song from the Dagari ethnic group in Ghana. It means "asking anxiously" and it's the story of a young guy who is too shy to ask his crush out. His friends tease him and tell him to do it despite anxiety.

This is a quite personal arrangement: I added my drums, solos, odd rhythms and flute.

Following the debut release of his minimal-music ensemble BANANA earlier this year, Josiah Steinbrick, the Los Angeles-based multi-instrumentalist, producer, and composer returns with his first collection of solo works titled Meeting Of Waters, available October 27th on LEAVING Records. The album shares some of that ensemble’s concerns, notably in its interest in pattern based music, but here the emphasis is placed on subtle explorations of percussive tones and creating interior or imagined worlds.

The works on Meeting of Waters stem from Steinbrick's childhood fascination with anthropology and travel tales and almost operates like a cartography of some indeterminate landscape. Each piece has a palette of one to five elements that work in harmony together -- with synthesizers, marimbaphones, tuned wood, idiophones, bells, and gongs providing resonant tones that slowly accrete in detail. There's a measured yet thoroughly engaging pace throughout, that, much like Malaysian Temiar Dream Music, seems to "interpret the heart of reality".

As in the work of David Toop, Toshi Tsuchitori, Walter Maioli, or Luis Pérez Ixoneztli (whom Steinbrick recently collaborated with), the pre-historic and hyper-modern are effortlessly intertwined. If - as famed French Structural Anthropologist Claude Lévi-Strauss believed - myths, music, and dreams are "machines for the suppression of time", then "Meeting of Waters" features nine ingeniously and exquisitely crafted examples of that theory in action.

Ami Dang fuses sitar, voice, and electronics to create east-meets-west, ambient/trance music. On the all-instrumental album Parted Plains, she draws inspiration from South Asian and Middle Eastern folktales, specifically, the four tragic romances of Punjab, Sohni Mahiwal, Sassi Punnun, Heer Ranjha, and Mirza Sahiba; Flora Annie Steel’s Tales of the Punjab: Folklore of India, and selected stories from One Thousand and One Nights. Galvanized by the Western interpretations of these stories, Parted Plains unfolds as a new sort of soundtrack for a yet-to-be written folktale that is neither Eastern nor Western, not traditional or contemporary--but somewhere in between.

Green-House is the project of Los Angeles based artist Olive Ardizoni.

Approaching the project with an intentional naivety, they craft songs that find freedom through simplicity. As a non-binary artist, they hope to create a space with fewer barriers as both a performer and a listener.

Their first release as Green-House, “Six songs for Invisible Gardens” (out Jan 15, 2020) was written with the intention of transforming the listening environment and augmenting domestic space. The music is designed as a communication with both plant life and the people who care for them.

Asa Tone is Jakarta-born Melati Malay and New York based Tristan Arp and Kaazi. In January 2018 the trio travelled to Indonesia during Melati’s annual return home, set up a temporary studio in a house nestled in the jungle’s canopy and recorded a series of improvisational pieces together, later edited for brevity. The music incorporates both digital and analogue processing and largely draws upon the groups collective voice, a small selection of instrumentation (Rindik, Moog Sub 37, Infinite Jets, Suling) and their immediate environment. Despite this, they aimed to record a kind of music together that doesn’t seem to come from one specific place, but instead, from everywhere.

The result is an idiosyncratic voyage of equatorial excursions in voice, mallets and synthesis, both transportative and fluid, yet firmly grounded in the earth. Cyclical, randomized patterns grow and blossom during these often delicate and heartfelt renderings, staying with the listener long after both sides fall silent.

Temporary Music LP will be released on January 31 2020 on Leaving Records. It is the group’s debut album.
