A wandering poet and ascetic Zen priest, Santōka was a disciple of Ogiwara Seisensui, one of the first poets to discard the traditional use of the 5-7-5 structure in haiku.

Santōka’s poetry emphasizes the necessity of sabi (solitude) in order to achieve spiritual enlightenment and serenity.

Misery Prize began life as an unnamed dark and dirty digital collaboration between producer, songwriter and musician Andy Ramsbottom, also known as AUXETTA and cult author, creative grifter, and vocalist Ryan Bracha, also known as Disgraceful Friend. 

It started out as a chance online encounter and one-off collaboration, but quickly became a socially aware tour de force, combining Bracha's harsh spoken word vocals with Ramsbottom's rasping backing and chorus vocals, against the thumping drums from Jesse Davies, who completed the band in early 2023 as they began performing live on stage.

The debut album Saints of Obscene was written and produced in less than 3 months in 2022, and demonstrates a wide range of sonic output, although with the introduction of Davies on drums, the band gained an aggressive identity personified by confrontation and social observation, backed by synths and samplers, which comes out in live performances.

Hope for the best, expect the worst. We are Misery Prize.
