Gasworks presents 'Out of an instance of expiration comes a perennial showing', the first UK solo exhibition by Los Angeles-based artist Gala Porras-Kim. 

With a focus on the British Museum’s vast collection of funerary art from ancient Egypt and Nubia, Porras-Kim examines the institutional afterlife of ceremonial objects and human remains displayed inside museum vitrines or assembled in storages, thinking through alternative ways of negotiating between the museum’s agenda and the invisible forces governing the eternal rest of their original owners.

Gasworks presents Buoyancy, the first UK institutional solo exhibition by Helsinki-based artist Juha Pekka Matias Laakkonen. With a focus on process and experience, Laakkonen’s work uses nature as a raw material to reflect on the impact of human interactions with the environment, while also tackling wider existential questions around time, death and the limits of scientific knowledge.

For this exhibition Laakkonen reflects on the profound impact of human interactions with the environment. The artist will bring an extinct sea cow back into existence over a series of weeks, as he carefully crafts and assembles a wooden replica of the creature’s huge skeleton in the gallery, based solely on a written description from the 18th century.
