About 700 years before Christ’s birth, the prophet Isaiah wrote, “The Spirit of the Lord Jehovah is upon Me, / Because Jehovah has anointed Me / To bring good news to the afflicted; / He has sent Me to bind up the wounds of the brokenhearted, / To proclaim liberty to the captives, / And the opening of the eyes to those who are bound” (Isaiah 61:1).

This prophecy was fulfilled centuries later in Nazareth of Galilee in ancient Israel. One Sabbath day, the Lord Jesus entered the local synagogue and was handed the scroll of Isaiah’s writings. He opened to 61:1-2, read it aloud, and told those in attendance, “Today this Scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing” (Luke 4:16-21).

This announcement was the proclaiming of the jubilee, which, in Old Testament times, occurred every fiftieth year. In the Old Testament jubilee, slaves were released from bondage, and each family’s allotted portion of the good land was restored to them. The year of jubilee in the Old Testament is a picture of the entire New Testament age, the age of grace, when God’s salvation is freely available to anyone who believes in Jesus Christ!

The one making the announcement was anointed by God. An anointed person is one who is chosen and sent to accomplish a certain task. The literal meaning of the word Christ is “the anointed One.”

Jesus Christ was anointed by God not only to accomplish redemption for us but also to carry out the wonderful commission in Isaiah 61:1-2. He takes away our sins, but He also releases us from the bondage of sin by giving us His life, heals our broken hearts, and opens our eyes, which were blinded by Satan’s deception, to see the wonderful truth in God’s Word!

If you haven’t yet received the jubilee proclaimed by the Lord Jesus, you can do so by praying this simple prayer:

“Lord Jesus, I believe in You. I confess that I am a sinner. Thank You for coming as the Christ to die for my sins and to proclaim the jubilee. Come into me to be my life. Release me from all the things that bind and afflict me. Open my eyes to see all that You have done for me.”

The Spirit of the Lord Jehovah Is upon Me (Isaiah 61:1)

In Revelation chapters 2 and 3, the Spirit speaks to seven churches in seven letters. Each church (except one) has its own particular shortcomings, signs of the corruption that has plagued the church since biblical times.

In each situation, however, the Lord calls for some among the believers to overcome the degraded situation in order to meet the His need for a bright, shining lampstand—the testimony of Jesus in this dark world.

Many believers aspire to cooperate with the Lord to be such overcomers. At the same time, we’re acutely aware of our fallen, sinful nature, our failures, and our inability to follow the Lord absolutely.

How can we ever overcome?

The lyrics of this song emphasize one simple point—Christ is the unique Overcomer. He is in us, and when we contact Him in our spirit, we are overcoming. When we look at overcoming as a lifelong venture, we wonder if we can make it. But each one of us can turn to the Lord right now, contact Him as the Overcomer right now, and be overcoming—right now!

Revelation 12:11 says, “And they overcame him because of the blood of the Lamb and because of the word of their testimony, and they loved not their soul-life even unto death.” Here, the overcomers triumph over the devil because they stand not on their own merit but on the Lord’s blood that cleanses them from every sin, and because they testify of the Lord’s victory over the devil.

First John 4:4 says, “You are of God, little children; and you have overcome them because greater is He who is in you than he who is in the world.” We have been born of God to be His children; Christ as the overcoming One is in us, and He is greater than the evil one and all who stand with him.

Romans 8:37 says, “But in all these things we more than conquer through Him who loved us.” The Lord has done everything for us. We can overcome in every situation not because of who we are, but because we are in Him and He is in us!

When we contact Christ as the unique Overcomer, we are overcoming RIGHT NOW!

Make Me an Overcomer

The Bible reveals that God is a sovereign Potter who created human beings as vessels to be filled with Him. Isaiah 64:8 says, “But now, Jehovah, You are our Father; we are the clay; and You, our Potter; and all of us are the work of Your hand.”

When we receive God’s salvation in Christ, we receive Jesus Christ into us. Like water fills a cup, Jesus Christ fills our human spirit. And as we enjoy Him day by day, He spreads into our thoughts, feelings, and intentions. He is the “treasure in earthen vessels” (2 Corinthians 4:7).

This song is full of prayers to be filled with the Lord. It was originally written for a young people's conference titled "Vessels unto Honor." It’s also the title track of our new album, “I’m Your Vessel.”

It’s a wonderful thing for sinners to believe in the Lord Jesus and receive Him as their Savior. But as soon as we receive the Lord, we may feel pressure to be a certain way in order to to please God or to show others that we’re a proper Christian. Inevitably, we realize that we can’t meet the standard we’ve set up for ourselves, and we get discouraged.

Actually, God created us as vessels so that we can be filled with Him as our content. Referring to the Lord Jesus, 2 Corinthians 4:7 says, “We have this treasure in earthen vessels.” When we’re filled with the Lord, every aspect of our Christian living flows out of His life within us.

The best way to be a Christian is to not to try to behave in a certain way, but to be filled with the Lord by loving Him, calling on His name, and allowing Him to make His home in our heart (Ephesians 3:17). It may sound crazy to tell the Lord a thousand times a day that we love Him, but if you try it, you’ll see the fruit of it in your daily living!

We face decisions every day, big and small, and many times we don’t know which way we should take. Sometimes we find ourselves in unexpected situations—perhaps difficult, painful, or bewildering—things that seem to cast doubt over all our thoughts of the future and leave us fearful, stressed, and anxious.

As believers in Christ, even when we feel like we’re groping in the darkness, we can still look to the Lord Jesus as our way, as our light, and as our supply.

Isaiah 50:10 says, “Let him who walks in darkness and has no light trust in the name of the Lord and rely on his God.”

Even more, in John 14:6, Jesus said, “I am the way and the reality and the life.”

When we don’t know what path to choose, we can cling to Him as our Way. In the words of this song, He is in us, “just waiting for me to say, I love You, Lord.” When we turn to the Lord in this way, He is grace to us and leads us on.
