Dr. Warburg discovered that cancer cells had an altered metabolism and, unlike every other cell, were low in oxygen due to a change in their cellular respiration. Instead of getting energy from oxygen, cancer cells have been using the fermentation of sugar instead. Warburg’s discovery is the foundation for the metabolic hallmark of cancer that is gaining major modern traction in both drug development and dietary interventions today.
