When we engage with the histories of genocide, crimes against humanity and mass atrocities and their aftermaths, the need for reparations, in whatever form, always becomes one of the prominent and topical issues. Usually, reparations are viewed in monitory or economic ways. Honouring, commemorating and memorialising the lives and struggles of those who perished or survived these mass atrocities and genocides may also offer healing and can be viewed as a form of reparation to the survivors and communities and families of those who perished. 

In this podcast, we will delve deeper into this often over-looked contribution by museums, memorials and Centres of memory, to emotional, cultural and psychological reparations. Joining us is Tali Nates, the Director of the Johannesburg Holocaust & Genocide Centre, Catherine Boyd who manages the Centre’s education department, and Mdu Ntuli, the Centre's Education Officer.

76 years after the end of the Holocaust and World War 2, many scholars continue to research and uncover new information about this period. Also, Holocaust and Genocide studies has become a global focus of academic and research inquiry by scholars of diverse backgrounds and nationalities. 

In this podcast, we focus on Holocaust and antisemitism awareness in India and Asia. Joining us is Prof. Navras Aafreedi, an Assistant Professor in the Department of History at Presidency University, Kolkata, where he teaches courses in Jewish History, Genocide Studies, Interfaith Relations, and Minority Studies. He is also a Research Fellow at the Institute for the Study of Global Antisemitism and Policy (ISGAP), New York.

In this episode we focus on the topic of toxic masculinity, and the idea of "dangerous men". Toxic masculinity is a concept often used to define unhealthy attributes associated with men and maleness. From being unemotional and power-hungry to narcissistic and violent, men are oftentimes defined by these stereotypes, which create an unhealthy and unrealistic understanding of what it means to be a man in society. 

The term toxic masculinity emerged in the early 1980's and 90’s, mainly as a result of what is referred to as the mythopoetic men's movement of that time, which was a body of self-help activities and therapeutic workshops and retreats for men undertaken by various organisations and authors in the United States. Masculinity and the study of men have become more and more important as focuses of academic, political and media inquiry. Some wonder if this is a backlash to feminism? Or is there something specific behind this interest?

Dangerous Fires | Sleepwalking through the Assault on Democracy

The Johannesburg Holocaust & Genocide Centre in partnership with the Austrian Service Abroad, is pleased to introduce Ruben Schaller.

Ruben is currently in Johannesburg to work as an intern (or Gedenkdiener) at the Johannesburg Holocaust & Genocide Centre as part of his Austrian Service Abroad. Austrian Service Abroad is a non-profit organisation founded by Dr. Andreas Maislinger, an Austrian historian and political scientist in 1998. The organisation sends young Austrians to work in partner institutions worldwide in the field of Holocaust commemoration.

Meet our Intern Ruben Schaller

In this podcast we are thrilled to be talking to Dr Greg Mills who heads the Johannesburg-based Brenthurst Foundation. The Foundation was established in 2005 by the Oppenheimer family to strengthen African economic performance. 

Mills holds degrees from the Universities of Cape Town (BA Hons) and Lancaster (MA cum laude, and PhD), and was first, the director of Studies and then the national director of the SA Institute of International affairs from 1994-2005. His latest book, Expensive Poverty, was launched this year at the JHGC and details the failings of aid to Africa, and suggests several ways to improve development outcomes. Expensive Poverty is a no-holds barred account of why trillions of dollars have failed to move the needle when it comes to human development, based on decades of research and experience on the ground from Afghanistan to all corners of Africa.

The Johannesburg Holocaust & Genocide Centre's Education Officer, Mdu Ntuli, welcomes Mary Kluk, Founder and Executive Director of the Durban Holocaust & Genocide Centre, for a conversation about the DHGC's journey over the past 11 years. Mary will touch on the significance of remembering the 1994 genocide in Rwanda at the Durban Holocaust & Genocide Centre, with the recent inclusion of the genocide as a case study in their permanent exhibition.
