The Johannesburg Holocaust and Genocide Centre (JHGC) is excited to present recorded audio short stories of genocide survivors and their experiences. These stories were initially part of an extraordinary educational project by South African primary school teacher Pamela Kantor’s project “rainbow nation to the rainbow world” that requests people and organizations to record various touching stories that will be listened to by South African primary school learners as a way of learning and inspiration during the lockdown.

The JHGC was happy to contribute these short stories of some Holocaust survivors. The stories relate their experiences at various points in their lives: before, during and after the Holocaust. These recorded short stories are aimed at being an easily accessible educational resource for the young learners, and all of us.

Cassidi and Wandile have been chosen as Youth Action Fellows for the Together We Remember Coalition,  a non-profit organisation which aims to foster collective memory and inspire collective action. They tell us what messages they have for other young leaders about leadership, democracy and making choices, in South Africa and abroad.

Dangerous Speech | Sleepwalking through the Assault on Democracy

In this week's podcast the JHGC focuses on the Hochfeld family's travelling exhibition currently on display at the Centre, titled, "The German-Jewish Dilemma: The Story of the Hochfeld Family from the 18th Century until Today".

In February 2019, the JHGC was pleased to house the travelling exhibition about the Hochfeld family for the first time. This exhibition explores the story and journey of the Hochfeld family from the 18th century to the present and also touches on the challenges of Jewish families in small German towns. This year the JHGC is once again pleased to house this exhibition for the second time. To tell us more about this travelling exhibition and this amazing relationship with the JHGC, we chat to Steve Hochfeld, who is the former Managing Director at Hochfeld Grains based in Johannesburg, his wife Penny Hochfeld, and Jürgen Scheffler, former Director of the Lemgo Municipal Museum and the Frenkel House Memorial based in Germany, and the curator of this exhibition.

JHGC in Conversation with Steve & Penny Hochfeld, and Juergen Scheffler on the German-Jewish Dilemma

Each year the 20th of June marks World Refugee Day. It is a special day when the world takes time to recognise the resilience of forcibly displaced people throughout the world. World Refugee Day is celebrated annually to honour the courage, strength and determination of women, men and children who are forced to flee their homes under threat of persecution, conflict and violence. 

To mark this day, the JHGC talks to Kate Pond, the spokesperson of the United Nations Human Rights Commissioner for Refugees(UNHCR, Refugee Agency in South Africa). Ms Pond talks about the experiences of refugees in South Africa and how we can be more aware of their plight and what we can do to engage in efforts that can assist in protecting their human rights.

JHGC in Conversation with Kate Pond on World Refugee Day

In 1941 the Nazis began a genocidal process aimed at killing every Jewish man, woman and child in Europe. They called this the ‘Final Solution’. Six Killing Centres, also known as “Death Camps” or “Extermination Camps”, were created in German-occupied Poland. These Killing Centres were designed for mass murder of human beings as efficiently and quickly as possible in gas chambers or vans. Chelmno, was the first operational killing centre, opened in December 1941. The other five killing centres were  Belzec, Sobibor, Treblinka, Majdanek and Auschwitz. 

This podcast focuses on Belzec and its memorial, in conversation with Barbara Buntman, a scholar and a long-time volunteer at the JHGC. Barbara unpacks some facts about Belzec and also talks to us about her recent publication with the JHGC on the same topic.

The history of the persecution of Jewish people by the Vichy Colonial Regime in West Africa and specifically, in Senegal is an unfamiliar history to most people. Previously, we had a conversation with artist Joe Turpin, who created an amazing exhibition which documents this history. When we engage with the histories of genocide, crimes against humanity and mass atrocities and their aftermaths, the need for reparations, in whatever form, always becomes one of the prominent and topical issues. Usually, reparations are viewed in monitory or economic ways. Honouring, commemorating and memorialising the lives and struggles of those who perished or survived these mass atrocities and genocides may also offer healing and can be viewed as a form of reparation to the survivors and communities and families of those who perished. 

In this podcast, we will delve deeper into this often over-looked contribution by museums, memorials and Centres of memory, to emotional, cultural and psychological reparations. Meet our Intern Ruben Schaller

In this podcast we are thrilled to be talking to Dr Greg Mills who heads the Johannesburg-based Brenthurst Foundation. The Foundation was established in 2005 by the Oppenheimer family to strengthen African economic performance. 

Mills holds degrees from the Universities of Cape Town (BA Hons) and Lancaster (MA cum laude, and PhD), and was first, the director of Studies and then the national director of the SA Institute of International affairs from 1994-2005. His latest book, Expensive Poverty, was launched this year at the JHGC and details the failings of aid to Africa, and suggests several ways to improve development outcomes. Expensive Poverty is a no-holds barred account of why trillions of dollars have failed to move the needle when it comes to human development, based on decades of research and experience on the ground from Afghanistan to all corners of Africa.

In this first podcast of 2023, Mdu talks to two members of the Global Consortium On Bigotry And Hate, Alexander Hinton & Nela Navarro from Rutgers University and the Center for the Study of Genocide and Human Rights. Over a month ago, the Johannesburg Holocaust & Genocide Centre hosted a special conference on the Consortium on Hate and Bigotry. This conference was attended by members of the consortium from the US, Latvia, Norway, Canada, France and South Africa. The Global Consortium On Bigotry And Hate was started in 2019, initiated by the Center for the Study of Genocide and Human Rights, part of Rutgers Global, in 2019, and runs through until 2025.

Standing Up to the Assault on Democracy with Nayat Karaköse

In this podcast, we are joined by Dr Nicole Fox. Dr Fox is an Associate Professor of Criminal Justice at California State University Sacramento. Her research centres on how racial and ethnic contention impacts communities, with a focus on how remembrances of adversity shape social change and collective memory. 

Her most recent book, published in 2021, is titled “After Genocide: Memory and Reconciliation in Rwanda”. Dr Fox launched her book in South Africa in March and shared her vast knowledge with many audiences. She speaks to us about her work, contemporary Rwanda and ways of remembering and teaching about the history of this genocide.

In this episode, our  4  experts have the incredible honor of speaking to Oleksandra Matviichuk, she is a human rights lawyer and activist. She is also the head of the non-profit organisation the “Centre for Civil Liberties” founded in 2007, which was the first Ukrainian organisation to receive the Nobel peace prize in 2022. Hello everyone and welcome back to this part two of my conversation with Prof Alexander Hinton about the Cambodian genocide. Just to remind you, (between 1975 and 1979), the Cambodian Genocide saw between 1.5 and 3 million people killed at the hands of the Khmer Rouge, a communist political group. The Khmer Rouge had taken power in the country following the Cambodian Civil War. During their brutal four-year rule, the Khmer Rouge was responsible for the deaths of nearly a quarter of Cambodians. Professor Alexander Hinton has written extensively on the Cambodian genocide and, in 2016, was an expert witness at the Khmer Rouge Tribunal.

Welcome to the 2025 series of podcasts recorded by students in the international course on ‘Cultures of Hate and Oppression: Connecting the Conversations between Antisemitism, the Holocaust, Colonialism and Gender’. Coordinated by Dr Adam Levin and Professor Merle Williams for the 2024/25 academic session. ‘Cultures of Hate and Oppression’ is a collaborative course which brings together colleagues and students from four highly regarded universities: our institution, the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, Central European University in Vienna, as well as Birkbeck and the School of Oriental and African Studies (both affiliated to London University). Our collaboration has been greatly enriched by our partnership with the Johannesburg Holocaust and Genocide Centre. This partnership has been integral to developing the timely, thoughtful and creative work produced by our students in the podcasts.

‘Cultures of Hate’ is a challenging and pathbreaking course because it brings together 4 topics that are often treated separately in academic discourse or even approached as somehow incompatible with one another: antisemitism, the Holocaust, colonialism and gender. Our aim is to trace and elucidate the overt or sometimes hidden connections between these phenomena. In this way, we explore the darkly intertwined legacies of prejudice, discrimination, racism and oppression that have shaped our contemporary world. 

For the ‘Cultures of Hate’ course assignment, students are invited to develop a podcast concentrating on one of the 4 major thematic areas treated in the course. They are allocated to cross-institutional groups consisting of 4–7 members each. These groups work under the guidance of a mentor to frame a clearly defined topic and to decide on a suitable approach, as well as assigning roles to individuals, writing a script and applying the necessary technical skills. This year, podcasts were recorded on aspects of antisemitism, the Holocaust, colonialism and gender. Here, we showcase the best three podcasts that were produced.
