The Johannesburg Holocaust and Genocide Centre (JHGC) is excited to present recorded audio short stories of genocide survivors and their experiences. These stories were initially part of an extraordinary educational project by South African primary school teacher Pamela Kantor’s project “rainbow nation to the rainbow world” that requests people and organizations to record various touching stories that will be listened to by South African primary school learners as a way of learning and inspiration during the lockdown.

The JHGC was happy to contribute these short stories of some Holocaust survivors. The stories relate their experiences at various points in their lives: before, during and after the Holocaust. These recorded short stories are aimed at being an easily accessible educational resource for the young learners, and all of us.

Dangerous Speech | Sleepwalking through the Assault on Democracy

From April to July every year the world commemorates the 100 days of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda.

The Gacaca is a community-based restorative justice system which had existed in Rwanda for many decades. It was this method of seeking justice and reconciliation that became the most useful and effective system to restore the country and its people after the genocide against the Tutsi in 1994.

In part 1 of this podcast, the Johannesburg Holocaust & Genocide Centre talks to three experts:

Prof Phil Clark, political scientist and professor of International Politics at the SOAS, University of London, which is the world's leading institution for the study of Asia, Africa and the Middle East. Prof. Clark specialises in conflict and post-conflict issues in Africa, particularly questions of peace, truth, justice and reconciliation.

Dr Sara Brown, is Executive Director at the Center for Holocaust, Human Rights & Genocide Education. She is the author of Gender and the Genocide in Rwanda: Women as Perpetrators and Rescuers and the co-editor of the forthcoming Routledge Handbook on Religion and Genocide.

Prof Hollie Nyseth Brehm, is Associate Professor in the Sociology Department at Ohio State University, and her interests are in tackling the fundamental questions of why and how atrocities occur and who commits them and the process of transitional justice after atrocities, including how societies rebuild.

JHGC in Conversation with Phil Clark, Sara Brown & Hollie Nyseth Brehm on Genocide in Rwanda Part 1

In this week's podcast the JHGC focuses on the Hochfeld family's travelling exhibition currently on display at the Centre, titled, "The German-Jewish Dilemma: The Story of the Hochfeld Family from the 18th Century until Today".

In February 2019, the JHGC was pleased to house the travelling exhibition about the Hochfeld family for the first time. This exhibition explores the story and journey of the Hochfeld family from the 18th century to the present and also touches on the challenges of Jewish families in small German towns. This year the JHGC is once again pleased to house this exhibition for the second time. To tell us more about this travelling exhibition and this amazing relationship with the JHGC, we chat to Steve Hochfeld, who is the former Managing Director at Hochfeld Grains based in Johannesburg, his wife Penny Hochfeld, and Jürgen Scheffler, former Director of the Lemgo Municipal Museum and the Frenkel House Memorial based in Germany, and the curator of this exhibition.

JHGC in Conversation with Steve & Penny Hochfeld, and Juergen Scheffler on the German-Jewish Dilemma

The Holocaust is the most documented genocide in history. Approximately six million Jews were murdered during the second world war by the Nazis in their intent to destroy the Jews of Europe. However, many Jews survived. This is the story of Shlomo Pieprz. Shlomo, born in 1927 in Poland survived the Holocaust and after the end of the second world war relocated to South Africa. This is his story of strength and survival.

The Story of Shlomo Pieprz

When we engage with the histories of genocide, crimes against humanity and mass atrocities and their aftermaths, the need for reparations, in whatever form, always becomes one of the prominent and topical issues. Usually, reparations are viewed in monitory or economic ways. Honouring, commemorating and memorialising the lives and struggles of those who perished or survived these mass atrocities and genocides may also offer healing and can be viewed as a form of reparation to the survivors and communities and families of those who perished. 

In this podcast, we will delve deeper into this often over-looked contribution by museums, memorials and Centres of memory, to emotional, cultural and psychological reparations. Joining us is Tali Nates, the Director of the Johannesburg Holocaust & Genocide Centre, Catherine Boyd who manages the Centre’s education department, and Mdu Ntuli, the Centre's Education Officer.

In this episode we focus on the topic of toxic masculinity, and the idea of "dangerous men". Toxic masculinity is a concept often used to define unhealthy attributes associated with men and maleness. From being unemotional and power-hungry to narcissistic and violent, men are oftentimes defined by these stereotypes, which create an unhealthy and unrealistic understanding of what it means to be a man in society. 

The term toxic masculinity emerged in the early 1980's and 90’s, mainly as a result of what is referred to as the mythopoetic men's movement of that time, which was a body of self-help activities and therapeutic workshops and retreats for men undertaken by various organisations and authors in the United States. Masculinity and the study of men have become more and more important as focuses of academic, political and media inquiry. Some wonder if this is a backlash to feminism? Or is there something specific behind this interest?

Meet our Intern Ruben Schaller

In this podcast we are thrilled to be talking to Dr Greg Mills who heads the Johannesburg-based Brenthurst Foundation. The Foundation was established in 2005 by the Oppenheimer family to strengthen African economic performance. 

Mills holds degrees from the Universities of Cape Town (BA Hons) and Lancaster (MA cum laude, and PhD), and was first, the director of Studies and then the national director of the SA Institute of International affairs from 1994-2005. His latest book, Expensive Poverty, was launched this year at the JHGC and details the failings of aid to Africa, and suggests several ways to improve development outcomes. Expensive Poverty is a no-holds barred account of why trillions of dollars have failed to move the needle when it comes to human development, based on decades of research and experience on the ground from Afghanistan to all corners of Africa.

Hello everyone and welcome back to this part two of my conversation with Prof Alexander Hinton about the Cambodian genocide. Just to remind you, (between 1975 and 1979), the Cambodian Genocide saw between 1.5 and 3 million people killed at the hands of the Khmer Rouge, a communist political group. The Khmer Rouge had taken power in the country following the Cambodian Civil War. During their brutal four-year rule, the Khmer Rouge was responsible for the deaths of nearly a quarter of Cambodians. Professor Alexander Hinton has written extensively on the Cambodian genocide and, in 2016, was an expert witness at the Khmer Rouge Tribunal.

Just to remind you, (between 1975 and 1979), the Cambodian Genocide saw between 1.5 and 3 million people killed at the hands of the Khmer Rouge, a communist political group. The Khmer Rouge had taken power in the country following the Cambodian Civil War. During their brutal four-year rule, the Khmer Rouge was responsible for the deaths of nearly a quarter of Cambodians. Professor Alexander Hinton has written extensively on the Cambodian genocide and, in 2016, was an expert witness at the Khmer Rouge Tribunal.

Thank you for tuning in to this week’s podcast. In this episode, Mdu talks to Dr Hikmet Karcic, who is the senior researcher at the University of Sarajevo in Bosnia & Herzegovina. The conversation centers on the genocide in Srebrenica, Bosnia, and briefly mentions the temporary exhibition hosted by the JHGC that looks at the 1990s as a decade of change -  looking at South Africa’s end of apartheid in 1994; the genocide in Rwanda against Tutsi in 1994; and the genocide in Srebrenica, Bosnia between 1992-1995.

Welcome to the 2025 series of podcasts recorded by students in the international course on ‘Cultures of Hate and Oppression: Connecting the Conversations between Antisemitism, the Holocaust, Colonialism and Gender’. Coordinated by Dr Adam Levin and Professor Merle Williams for the 2024/25 academic session. ‘Cultures of Hate and Oppression’ is a collaborative course which brings together colleagues and students from four highly regarded universities: our institution, the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, Central European University in Vienna, as well as Birkbeck and the School of Oriental and African Studies (both affiliated to London University). Our collaboration has been greatly enriched by our partnership with the Johannesburg Holocaust and Genocide Centre. This partnership has been integral to developing the timely, thoughtful and creative work produced by our students in the podcasts.

‘Cultures of Hate’ is a challenging and pathbreaking course because it brings together 4 topics that are often treated separately in academic discourse or even approached as somehow incompatible with one another: antisemitism, the Holocaust, colonialism and gender. Our aim is to trace and elucidate the overt or sometimes hidden connections between these phenomena. In this way, we explore the darkly intertwined legacies of prejudice, discrimination, racism and oppression that have shaped our contemporary world. 

For the ‘Cultures of Hate’ course assignment, students are invited to develop a podcast concentrating on one of the 4 major thematic areas treated in the course. They are allocated to cross-institutional groups consisting of 4–7 members each. These groups work under the guidance of a mentor to frame a clearly defined topic and to decide on a suitable approach, as well as assigning roles to individuals, writing a script and applying the necessary technical skills. This year, podcasts were recorded on aspects of antisemitism, the Holocaust, colonialism and gender. Here, we showcase the best three podcasts that were produced.

The third talk linked to the exhibition 'Through the Lens of My Camera: Portraits of Holocaust Survivors in Johannesburg' held on 14 August 2019.

The Johannesburg Holocaust & Genocide Centre in partnership with the Rosa Luxemburg Stiftung presents  a powerful and poignant exhibition, featuring 32 portraits of Johannesburg-based Holocaust Survivors.

Through the Lens of My Camera: Portraits of Holocaust Survivors in Johannesburg -  Irene Klass

Philip Miller was commissioned to create a soundscape for the 'Garden of Reflection', officially opened to the public in March 2019. It is called Remember / זכור / Ibuka. We encourage everyone to listen with ordinary stereo headphones, as Philip has created a special new immersive 3D sound mix.

Philip created this work during a two years period, holding workshops with survivors of the genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda now living in Cape Town and Johannesburg, as well as with survivors of the Holocaust. The workshops engaged with the sounds and songs which resonate for each participant. These were recorded and created into a soundscape that became the seeds of his composition - combining spoken word, song and instrumental accompaniment.

Sound is a very powerful tool for evoking memory and uniquely connects into the internal emotional world of the listener - lullabies from childhood, partisan songs, and communal singing and dancing all form a part of the musical mosaic of the piece. The structure of the work follows the very rich tradition in African vocal music of call and response. This form allowed for a dialogue between the very different experiences of different survivors, yet at times, making new and powerful connections.

Philip Miller would like to dedicate this version to all the survivors who participated in this installation.

He is grateful for the support of Wendy Fisher and the Lithuanian Embassy in the creation of this work. He also would like to acknowledge the amazing work of Gavan Eckhart who designed the sound for the installation and this binaural mix.

Children during Conflict: Kindertransport & the story of Brigitte Rossi-Zalmans

Holocaust survivor Brigitte Rossi-Zalmans (née Markes)was born in Hattingen, Germany and moved to Great Britain on the Kindertransport at the end of 1938, where she was when the war ended.

The Story of Gitta Rossi-Zalmans

JHGC Education Officer, Mdu Ntuli, speaks to Prof. Shirli Gilbert about the importance of teaching Holocaust history, historical antisemitism in South Africa, and the themes to consider when looking at the two.
Inspired by her most recent book with Dr Avril Alba from the University of Sydney "Holocaust Memory and Racism in the Postwar World" (Wayne State University Press, 2019, as well as her live webinar with the JHGC in August 2020 "Displaced: Renewal in the shadow of the holocaust" (recording not available).

Prof. Gilbert is a specialist in modern Jewish history, with a particular interest in the Holocaust and its legacies, modern Jewish identity, and Jews in South Africa.  She is Professor of Modern Jewish History with the Department of Hebrew and Jewish Studies at University College London, and Academic Director at the Sir Martin Gilbert Learning Centre in London, and also contributed to the curation of the permanent exhibition at the Johannesburg Holocaust and Genocide Centre.
