Formé en 1981 à Bordeaux, Takenoko est l'un des groupes pionniers de la synthpop en France. 
Fasciné par la culture japonaise le groupe décide de s’appeler Takenoko (jeune pousse de bambou et métaphore du teenager au Japon) et choisit d’être un groupe de studio qui se met en scène.
Influencé par des groupes anglais tels que New Order, Heaven 17 ou The Human League, les Japonais de Plastics, et les Allemands de Kraftwerk, Takenoko distille une électro-pop dansante support à des textes évoquant avec ironie la violence du monde et ses dérives.
