Juho Kahilainen -the man who actually inspired label owner Max_M to conceive the Grey Series sublabel- returns with a new EP of experimental excursions that delve into the darkest realms of dance music.
From the opener 'In Umbra', the sense of freedom and detachment from genres' standards and limitations is palpable. It's a tense, stripped down drum pattern that might adhere to the recent resurgence of broken beats, hosting a breathtaking and unapologetic melody from the heyday of idm that only ends in a sea of bass reverbs. Undefinable.
'Xemx' has a regular 4/4, rich with vintage analog sounds. The thick layer of spacey and sinister soundwaves that slowly grows inside it reinforces the thematic nature of the EP, inspired by the artist's emotional reflections on the "Dyson sphere", a scientific concept imagining a system of orbiting solar-power satellites meant to completely encompass a star and capture most or all of its energy output.
On the flipside 'Coronal Loop' is an exercise in analog techno shamanism. You could say that this is a friendlier track, gelid and dark, but with that forward-driving bassline that defines irresistible techno.
Closing the EP, 'The Fuck Up' is a similar experiment where the loops gets nastier, interestingly enhanced by elements of raw Detroit techno. It's mind-bending dance music dedicated to those who lose themselves captured by the properties of good techno.
Max_M and his Grey Series continue to grant freedom to artists deviating from cliches and formulas. Juho's "Dyson Sphere" encompasses that exact desire.

The R Zone series excels at raw, inventive, off kilter club music from a range of mysterious artists. That fine tradition continues once more here with another four cuts of inventive music that takes cues from techno, IDM, acid and house. 

Lumidei is all wonky drums and out of time hits and is a brilliantly weird cut full of spacious atmospherics. Mynheer is built on a bed of broken beats, knocking hits and metallic textures that all tumble and fall around loosely and invitingly. Dédale d´or then takes you on a trip through the outer edges of the universe with rough hits and drums scraping out a groove as big, bold synth chords add an air of melancholy and finality to proceedings. Things close out with Skagerrak, a perfectly roughhewn drum track that is backed with sensuous synths and lots of cosmic moods. Arresting and compelling, this yet is another unique R Zone release that cannot fail to stand out in any DJ set.

Its eponymous title track is described perfectly by its name — a lethal rhythmically compelling club track primed for the peak of a late-night DJ set. FOR EACH has the listener ascending an endless staircase of arpeggios, chased by raw electro beats. HEXES is introspective, reinforcing Michael's talent for writing sublime melodic hooks. A deep collaboration born behind the decks during the last seasons.

Space ambient track from the electro soldier @the-exaltics, explores the parallel worlds with his iconic sound. The electro duo Faceless Mind @asa0asd90i4rfdas straight outta North Europe kicked it with “Viggen Formations”: heavy bassline, highly evocative and hypnotic synth. Follow up the B1. Keep on going with the well-crafted formula @dj_vietnam and Haterparisi. Generated arpeggios by modular square-waves with syncopated beats reminding their techno background tells the experience of an alien abduction. Justin @Cudmore’s “Are You Ready” is the track that’s making you stay at the party long after you started saying you should really get home. Justin tells us that “Are You Ready” is the result of some early experimentation with the studio setup in his old apartment and one of the first white label acid tracks he began playing out, even before his popular debut for The Bunker NY, “Forget It” was released. “The elements came together quickly in an afternoon session -- I had been recently inspired by a trove of acapellas I’d come across. I would say this is when arranging the track really clicked and I started truly assembling it with the dance floor in mind.” Over the next two years, the track became a secret weapon that made its way into the hands of DJs like Craig Richards, Mike Servito, Jackmaster, Derek Plaslaiko and Gerd Janson, becoming something of a sleeper hit.

As Justin made more music and time progressed it seemed that there wasn’t a proper home for “Are You Ready” so he moved on to other projects and the track was shelved until 2018 when he heard Derek @Plaslaiko play it out again in Brooklyn and the idea for Derek to remix it was hatched. The sleazy vibe is timeless and time-suspending, rocking the darker corners of the afterhours with retro-minded, future-looking vibes. Plaslaiko’s remix ups the sleaze serving a dubbed out mood that brings to mind Monday morning sunrises in Detroit, while @gunnar_haslam’s treatment snaps us all out of it a bit by sharpening up the melody and bringing the percolating acid line to the fore.

Deadwalkman is known as one of the most prolific and talented producers and DJ of the blossoming colombian techno scene. Based in Bogota, and being a resident of the infamous Baum club, he now joins the OFF Recordings roster. For „Feels Like', Deadwalkman teamed up with Malu Radice, who provides poetic spoken word vocals that perfectly complement the minimalistic acid instrumental. Andre Crom offers a peaktime interpretation of the lead track, adding banging overdriven drums for peaktime feel. „System / Range' is a super-functional techno-tool. „Manhattan Claps' combines chord stabs and (a lot of) claps to build another peaktime monster. Finally, „Sagan Track' delivers a deep and brooding intro-tool, featuring another haunting vocal by Beatriz Dela Pava.
