Yet many of those who are emotionally broken and suicidal, remain on waiting lists of up to 6 months, even between appointments, due to the unequal funding and institutional bias, that mental health services receive compared to physical health.

Like any problem, there’s no single solution. With the WILL of Sir Harry Burns, then the Scottish Government Chief Medical Officer and support from NHS 24, it’s been the mission of husband and wife team Iain and Maureen to find the WAY to deliver the service, having both been personally affected.

Iain’s sister, herself an NHS Psychiatrist completed suicide and the subsequent challenge as parents, when Iain & Maureen’s eldest daughter survived multiple suicide attempts, only strengthened their resolve and expertise with helping others live with and manage self harm & depression. Not least, giving them both first hand experience of a deeply flawed Mental Health Service and a desire to do something about it.

Maureen became a Counsellor and a Trainer in Self Harm & Suicide Intervention Skills for ‘Choose Life’, The Scottish Government’s Suicide Prevention Strategy. However, not content with audience numbers and aiming to spread her message of HOPE, Maureen started writing and performing her own music. The Honourable Doug Black, Q.C. was elected by Albertans as a Senator-in-Waiting on April 23, 2012. In that election, he received the most votes received by any elected representative in Canada before or since. He was subsequently appointed to The Senate of Canada on January 25, 2013. Today, he continues to be an active Senator on behalf of Albertans. Additionally, he chairs the Standing Senate Committee on Banking, Trade and Commerce, the first Albertan to do so.

Prior to serving in the Senate, Senator Black practiced law, and served as a board member or advisor to several Canadian businesses. He was appointed Queen’s Counsel in 2002 and was named in 2012 as one of Canada’s most influential lawyers by Canadian Lawyer Magazine.  

Deeply involved in his community, Senator Black has been awarded the Alberta Centennial Medal in recognition of his community contributions. He has served as Chair of the Board of Governors of the University of Calgary, Chair of the Capital Campaign for the Banff Centre, Governor Emeritus of the Banff Centre, and was founder of Lakecrest School in St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador.

Senator Black was the founding president of the Energy Policy Institute of Canada, the organization dedicated to the development of a Canadian energy framework. He is also the co-founder of Alberta2.0, a group of Alberta leaders who have developed a roadmap for a more robust and resilient Albertan economy.

Additionally Senator Black sits on the executive of the Canada-Europe Parliamentary Association and the Canada-China Legislative Association. Senator Black lives in Alberta with his wife, and together they have two married children, and two grandchildren.

Born in Chicago to immigrant parents from Ghana, a nation of West Africa, Goldie Sikafuturo has always been immersed in robust cultural diversity due to her rich family bloodline of Kings, Queens, Dignitaries, and Historians. Her musical talents were uncovered by her family at an early age: her grandmother, a renowned Singer/Voice Teacher in Ghana, attempted to sooth her granddaughter's crying by playing music and singing to her. Not only did this stop her granddaughter's crying, but a young, precocious Goldie was often found to dance to the rhythm of the music, which became her first love.

Growing up as a young child and teenager in the suburbs outside of Chicago in the 80s and 90s, Goldie Sikafuturo’s love for music was heavily influenced by her parents and older brothers’ diverse musical tastes, spanning R&B, Soul, Jazz, Reggae, Classic Rock & Alternative, Bossa Nova, Hip-Hop, Deep House, Ghanaian Highlife, Afro Beat and Funk. Goldie started piano lessons at the age of six and wrote her first song at the age of fourteen. At a high school talent show, she wowed her teachers and classmates with a rendition of Lauryn Hill’s “To Zion.” During her time in the Chicago area she made a name for herself by singing at various festivals, public and private events within the Ghanaian community.

After moving to Washington, DC in 2000, she continued her education at American University, majoring in Literature and Pre-Medicine. While there, she honed her craft as a vocalist by joining the University’s Gospel Choir and by receiving classical training that saw her singing operatic scores in Italian, German and Spanish. She also developed her performance skills by choreographing dance numbers for a Hip-Hop dance group.

After college, she continued to make a name for herself in DC through her Spoken Word Poetry performances while working as an Events Nightlife Coordinator and Club Promoter for the hottest venues in town. She maintained great professional and personal relationships with friends from all over the world. Never once did she stop writing songs.

After obtaining her Master of Science degree in Clinical Research Administration at George Washington University and maintaining a corporate job in the scientific world for several years, she decided she needed a change. Moving to Miami in the spring of 2013, she immersed herself even more deeply in cultural diversity and eclectic music. In the fall, she joined forces with her Vocal Coach/Producer, Axel S. Ortiz. Together they melded and honed her vocal talents, unique life experiences, and exposure to a melting pot of cultures. In the winter of 2016, she finished recording her first project entitled “Citizen of the World,” a musical stew of influences which include World Beat, Afrobeat, Jazz, Afrocuban, R&B/Soul, Hip-Hop, Rock, and Pop.

Revered as a legendary Hip Hop artist, Dana Dane helped pioneer the rap genre in the early 1980s. His debut album, 1987’s Dana Dane With Fame, was the first rap album by a solo Brooklyn artist to be certified gold thanks in part to his landmark story raps on songs such as “Nightmares” and “Cinderella Dana Dane.” The project also garnered him a Soul Train Music Award nomination for Best Album of the Year and celebrated its 30-year anniversary in 2017. 

As a seasoned entertainer who still rocks crowds today with high-energy performances, Dana Dane takes audiences back to the origins of Hip Hop culture during his concerts. It’s a time of pure fun, one where Dana engages the audience through crowd participation and call-and-response interaction throughout his show. In addition to his solo sets, Dana Dane also performs as a founding member of The Alumni, the super group consisting of Dana Dane, Kwame, Chubb Rock, Special Ed and Monie Love.

With the new music he’s recording and releasing, Dana Dane has established himself as a rap innovator and a creative talent able to evolve and remain relevant. In addition to his forthcoming solo projects, he’s teamed with Nigel Stargate (p/k/a platinum producer Caviar) to form the group Greatness. The pair released its acclaimed “Monolithic” single in 2017.

Beyond making music and performing, Dana Dane has expanded his reach into other media. He spent more than six years behind the microphone as an on-air personality for the Sirius Satellite Radio Backspin channel. In 2003, Dana Dane launched his own Def Beat Entertainment media company and has become a published author (2009’s Numbers), and screenwriter and film producer (2014’s Jesus). Now based in Los Angeles, Dana Dane is developing and shopping film and television projects, including a documentary on his life story, as well as a screenplay based on his “Cinderella Dana Dane” single. Dana Dane’s robust creative output stems from his drive to meet his goals and to be successful while doing so. “One of the best feelings I’ve ever felt,” he reveals, “is bringing an idea from conception to completion.” Dana Dane is also deeply committed to helping others and sharing his blessings with those in need. He is a spokesperson and co-founder of the Hip Hop Humanism movement, whose mission is to reestablish the ties that bind us as people worldwide using the culture of Hip Hop. Dana Dane’s goal is for people to keep in mind that Hip Hop is more than the music, a style of dress or an attitude. It also encompasses the art of creative thinking, which he believes is one of the key components of a healthy society.

Another way Dana Dane gives back to the community is by serving as a Board Member for the Linda B. Pinchoff Foundation, which brings a voice and support to cancer patients and their family members.

Good music never goes out of style. It emanates from an intangible, authentic space and reverberates with a very special frequency beyond the boundaries of time. Those who know it, feel it. Toronto native Veronica Domingues is mastering the art of crafting timeless music with a unique twist on mid 90s hip-hop soul on her sparkling debut EP Just Chill. Vaunted by SingersRoom.com and deemed a bounce-worthy “rare bird” by esteemed music website SoulBounce.com, the bubbly 24-year-old singer-songwriter effortlessly infuses head nodding beats and jazzy melodies with a vibrant vocal style – resulting in what will be one of the industry’s most stunning releases of the year. 

Reared in a Portuguese household where traditional music styles from her parents’ home country permeated the air, Veronica sought balance early on by listening to influences as varied as Shania Twain and Whitney Houston. During high school, she honed her vocal chops singing in her church choir. Yet while she consistently exhibited a talent for music, her family wasn’t particularly supportive at the onset. “They wanted me to go to college and get a degree in a field where you can make money,” she laughs. “But once I got older, things started to change.” 

Honoring her parents’ wishes, she entered college after high school. However, there was a gaping void in Veronica’s soul that only music could fill. She decided to put college on the back burner to pursue her musical interests with fervor and focus. During this period of intense reflection, she entered a citywide talent competition - The Amateur Singing Contest with John Santos. After months of performances, Veronica breezed past her competitors with ease and was eventually crowned the victor. 

During this period, Veronica’s confidence in her impressive vocal abilities soared. Further immersing herself in the world of music, she unselfishly volunteered her time at a local youth center where she instructed youth without resources in the art of creating their own music. There, she would meet her future collaborator in producer/ rapper Junia-T of popular Toronto hip-hop duo Smash Brovaz. Yet while the opportunity for collaboration seemed to have fallen into her lap, Veronica admits that she wasn’t quick to seize the moment. “I never really planned to do the EP,” she says. “I was still trying to find my voice. Because I never really knew what style I did.”

But after she and Junia-T developed a stronger rapport, the producer began to send her instrumental tracks to write songs to. Eventually, one of these tracks created the spark that would kindle the fire of Just Chill. After the recording session for “Catch Me When I Fall,” Veronica was certain that she’d found her voice and style. “I went with him to the studio and he made a beat from scratch. I wrote the song in about 10 minutes. When I heard it finished for the first time, I felt I needed to make an EP.”

Just Chill is a mellow 8-track journey through a period of intense reflection. “Every song on the EP has something to do with the time I decided to leave school and focus on music,” she says. Produced and written entirely by Junia-T and Veronica, the EP is brilliantly embroidered with crisp break beats and robust live instrumentation.  As the pair began putting the pieces of the EP together, Veronica simultaneously began sharpening her songwriting skills by relying on an old pastime. “Before I started writing my EP, I used to write poetry,” she admits. “It was just me writing down my thoughts. Then I started writing songs.” Throughout the process, she never lacked for sources of inspiration. “Life inspires my songwriting. Every thing around me is inspiration. When I feel a certain way, I write about it.”

The first single, “I Get High (featuring C-Flowz),” is a tune about the natural high Veronica has always derived from music. “Obviously when you listen to it, you’re going to just think it’s about something else,” she laughs. “But the lyrics are about how music elevates your mind state. When you’re sad, it has the power to change your mood. It’s about music making you feel really good.” Furthermore, “Love” is a pulsing piano driven ode to her undying dedication to music wrapped in a romantic metaphor. “A lot of people might think it’s a love song about a guy. But it’s actually about the love I have for music. It’s also me talking to a guy saying that if you want to be with me, you have to appreciate music and know that this is what I want to do for the rest of my life.” “Eu Querro” was crafted partly in homage to her parents’ native language. “It’s a Portuguese song with Brazilian and soul influences,” explains Veronica. “The typical music that played in my household growing up was a folklore, rancho music from Portugal. But I wanted to do something totally different with it to make it stand out a bit more. But the song is about me wanting someone really bad and only wanting to be with that one person.” Flaunting a funky jazz-fusion sample, “Keep On (featuring Bubba)” is a feel good jam with a syncopated bounce and pristine trumpet solo. “It’s about having a good time and enjoying the company of who you’re with. It’s all about feeling good.” The deeply personal “Catch Me When I Fall” details a critical moment in Veronica’s life where indecision and inertia reigned. “The song is me talking to my dad about my struggle,” she concedes. “It’s a tribute to him being there and picking me up when I fell.”

Toronto-based filmmaker Customatic was drafted to create captivating videos for “I Get High,” “Love,” and “Eu Querro.”  As tracks for Just Chill began to circulate around the music industry, the reaction was favorable and immediate. Producers with credits on artists such as Kid Cudi, Kelly Rowland, and Beyonce began to express interest in working with the young songbird. But Veronica remains focused on creating timeless music and crafting a unique sound her own way.  

Her forthcoming full-length album in the works will feature an 8-piece band, backing vocalists, and a host of other surprises. “I want to have my own sound, but incorporate the old soul live band sound. The album will be very different from the EP. It will be more about me being happy and in a good place in my life.” But until then, Veronica is confident that Just Chill is an adequate first impression – an offering from a new artist that aims to strike a balance in an industry consumed with accelerated BPMs and flashing party lights. “There’s so much dance music on the market today,” she muses. “So much so that I feel like people don’t appreciate their alone time. Time spent just relaxing. Just Chill is about appreciating that time by yourself. Those precious moments you have before you rush out into the world.”

DJ Bubbles’ musical career can be traced back to an early enthralment with 70’s Soul/Disco, Funk, World Music, Hip Hop and heavy doses of Jazz. Recollections of the first encounter with the gentle twirl of the gramophone are imprinted in his technique; the texture of wax indelible in his signature brews of nostalgic homage and futuristic ventures. The allure of dusty crates deeply influenced his intuitive ear and probably explains his effortless concoctions of genres in their multiplicity. 
His renowned kaleidoscopes of Funk, Soulful House and Afro-beat, infused with sprinklings of Dub and Electronica sway hips and bump heads on dance floors, stereos and cyber space. Under Bubbles’ meticulous instruction genres fuse and overlap, each a robust vertebra of an ever-malleable spine, bending, writhing and straightening to the guttural tunes of protest music. 
He gained his reputation as ‘the go to guy when you want that heat’ as a Sales Consultant at Flipside Records (which he later managed) in the late 1990s. During his time at Flipside Records he mixed the acclaimed Flipside House Vol. 2 and oversaw the release of Flipside House Vol. 3 mixed by DJ Koti. He has since churned out a steady stream of compelling compilations for the now defunct USM Records and an array of scrumptious mixes for Organik Soul to be found at organiksoul.blogspot.com. 
DJ Bubbles was an instrumental part of the budding Deep House movement of the early 2000s which have its roots in Pretoria . His acclaimed compilations have won him residencies and guest appearances in and around South Africa at reputable establishments including Zwakala Jazz Café, Mushroom Loungeatery (Sunnyside) and Cool Runnings (Pretoria); Lucky Bean (Melville), Bassline (Newtown), Kitchener’s Carvery Bar (Braamfontein), Capitol Lounge (Rosebank); DnE (Port Elizabeth), House of Blues (Gaborone) and Bucannan Square (Cape Town). He is also a sought after event DJ who ceaselessly captivated an assortment of crowds at events including the Oppikoppi Tuks RAG in 2001 and 2003, the African Film summit, the Backstage AIDS Benefit Concert (2006) and shared the stage with formidable guitarist Madala Kunene at the 2012 Africa Day Festival
