Better Late Than Never

Lanterns caught by the wind as they rise above
Dark fields whose furrows are hid from the gaze of love
Memories alight in the dark drifting where no man strides
Tears fall for joy and for pain
Pulled by the moon like tides

Moments once present now melting away
The fire, the instant, burns now
All of the ghosts of our yesterday’s gone
As far as the embers allow

Mother holds daughter tight, wrapped in her arms
Watching the lights drift away
Daughter asks why the lights will not return
And mother has nothing to say

Blotted and lost in the ink
The lanterns may be gone from sight
But drifting upon the brink
We never forget their light
