Clouds and rain scatter across a line of light. The wind sculpts the rain into glass-like prisms. The sky is thick with flecks of gold. The horizon now slick with a translucent veil.

Part 1 (of 3) Thalia embedded herself in this industrial valley. She walked the bridge above a thick passage of cars and between columns of brick.  Crossing the Bruckner she wanted to un-layer this place: this landscape termed raw, unforgiving, desolate, and stark, words others pressed in with.

The ancestors of all living things began in the ocean.  It was a metal-laden hydrothermal pool: a volatile environment. This birth beneath the sea is our lineage.  On land we returned to metal.

He is a speck /a flash of orange in a mound of black./
I tread  quick and hard / I chase the tail end of his scarf. / If only I could catch  a piece of him. / My soles slam cement. / I am impact. /  I am the crush which fractures a city.  / Impact. / Crack. / In a split of heads there is a thread of him. I push/ farther /closer.

Double Incantation

Marissa Anne Ayala is a writer and artist based in NYC. She has an MFA from the New School for Creative Writing and a BA from Naropa University's Jack Kerouac School of Disembodied Poetics. Her collaborative project, Inside/Outside: a map of self and place, was featured in Handwritten: a place in space for pen and paper. She appeared in Connotation Press, designed and led a series of creative writing workshops with The Battery Conservancy, and continues to merge her love of art and literature.
