Goodmorning from Goa angels,

Wake up slowly to another banger of a set by our Geju. Ever since the Russian duo set foot inside our Gardens we have been completely addicted to their sound. The longer they play the more interesting it becomes and like always we gave them a three hour set during our Amsterdam Dance Event together.

Enjoy and tell us what you think. Even though we pick up on the deep and dark sound of the two, it also picks up the pace. Unlike Geju? Or did we enter a new period of time for these supertalent.

Be as it may, we are obsessed once again.

One of my usual software based "compositions" consisting of a couple of VSTi and VST effects, mainly Adaptiverb and MGranularMB but also featuring Pro-R and Timeless, as always, of course.

DAW used was Studio One 3.5 installed on my recently acquired Surface Pro laptop. I wanted to see what this little thing could do and I have to say that I am impressed. In order to keep CPU usage down to a minimum the VSTi instances were rendered once I was happy with a particular track and then a new VSTi would be inserted. Sounds a pain but this method suits my way of working for this kind of stuff which is more effects centred.

Nothing special, but I wanted to share :-)

Henrik has been an integral part of the Ambientologist family from the beginning, and it’s with great pride that his work be showcased as an early member of the label family, and more still in offering a rare full length album.

Själ ties everything the Stockholm based cellist has been doing into a consolidated, coherent and above all magnificent work, filled with rich emotion and, in keeping with its namesake, beguiling soul. As one of the most expressive instruments at a composer’s disposal, Henrik allows the cello to do the talking. Slow and deeply stirring arcs, married with sweeter taps of piano, cello plucks and subtle electronics.

The evocative capacity of television or film scores pervades the album, each track painting up vivid imagery of both the real and the transcendent. Sväva takes the listener on a journey above a rolling desert, while Ren Och Fin paints a pensive picture of medieval Europe that would give Ramin Djawardi a run for his money. Master of atmosphere, anthéne, provides the epilogue with his expansive deconstruction of Kraft.

Above all, Själ is as elegant as it is grounded in immersive feeling and deep, resonant imagery. And in his own words:

The soul communicating with the nervous system.
It gives you thoughts and images in your inner mind.
It can be memories or diffuse pictures. It takes you away from reality.
A musical-tonal floating away of the mind.

Sleep Architects

A collaboration with a music friend Encym (Roland Reinke).   I have done a few collaborations with Roland now and it is always a pleasure to work with him.
This particular track features some guitar sounds from Roland which I have done my ususal trick of weaving my own sounds around his. After an almost 6 year hiatus, and the break up of the audio-visual trio it had evolved into, Origamibiro returns with Miscellany, a body of work amassed during the years since the release of 2014’s Odham’s Standard.

Though the group never officially disbanded, a number of life-changing events meant it simply became impossible to continue together. As such, the project organically reverted back to the solo pursuits of composer Tom Hill. Fellow multi-instrumentalist Andy Tytherleigh, however, remains a strong collaborator.

Miscellany comprises a varied mixture of work, ranging from electroacoustic to orchestral chamber music. Drawing upon much of the found-sound style for which Origamibiro became known, the DIY approach to sampling and composing continues to play a central role in the process.

Exploration into the tangible nature of everyday objects and textures - both in and outside of the home - is a theme relished in much of Origamibiro’s work. Forest brambles and plastic toy Easter eggs are examined in surgical detail alongside the debris of demolished piano parts, to be repurposed into whatever sonic potential they offer up.

However, new additions to the instrumental palette - viola da gamba, piano, zither, singing bowl, glockenspiel, drum machines and gongs - contribute to an even broader timbre.

Miscellany will be released on Denovali, March 2021.
