Premiere: Keepsakes - Only The Dregs Remain [SLAM015]

DJs Shinpei and Kentaro were friends and fellow DJs at a monthly rock party called Popground in Kurume City, Fukuoka Prefecture, Japan. They made this album by mixing music on turntables and adding samples with a Roland Dr. Sample 303. The Popground party ran at least from 2004 to 2007 and was held at two venues in the city. In the photograph, Shinpei is on the far left and Kentaro is on the far right.
On March 31, 2021, Shinpei Yamanaka passed away. He will be dearly missed. This is part of his musical legacy.
DJ山中信平と健太郎は、福岡県久留米市で毎月開催されるロックパーティー「ポップグラウンド」の友人であり、仲間のDJでした。 彼らはターンテーブルで音楽をミックスし、Roland Dr. Sample 303でサンプルを追加することでこのミックスのアルバムを作成しました。ポップグラウンドのパーティーは少なくとも2004年から2007年まで開催され、市内の2つの会場で開催されました。 写真では、左端が信平、右端が健太郎です。
2021年3月31日、山中信平が亡くなりました。 彼は心から惜しまれる。 これは彼の音楽的遺産の一部です。

Adam Beyer’s Drumcode juggernaut attracts more fans and critical plaudits with each passing year. Holding firm on its future facing ethos, techno’s number one label presents a new volume in its acclaimed A-Sides series with 20 prime tracks to signify its 20th anniversary. 

Such is the volume of quality music Adam Beyer receives throughout the course of the year, releasing all of it would be impossible. Enter the blue chip A-Sides series: a chance for the quality-obsessive label head to issue a collection of outstanding tracks that couldn’t fit in their regular EP release schedule. 

With an eye on future talent, as much as the label’s established roster of heavy-hitters, the compilation showcases the full breadth of Drumcode’s multifaceted techno sound, equal parts inspiring and functional. 

Led by the stealth techno funk of ‘Nine of You’, Beyer’s deft collaboration with Mark Reeve, the compilation takes in exciting highlights from big guns such as Alan Fitzpatrick, Dustin Zahn, Bart Skils, Pleasurekraft, Luca Agnelli, Jay Lumen, Kaiserdisco and Gary Beck. 

The rich vein of form displayed by emerging techno talent is similarly given prime position. Rising DJ/producer Boxia makes his Drumcode debut, fresh from a well-received warm up set for the crew at the hugely successful Junction 2 festival in London, while the likes of Enrico Sangiuliano, Juan Sanchez, Ian O’Donovan and Timmo also drop fire, establishing their credentials as some of the most promising talent breaking through the ranks in 2016. 

Reinforcing the global scope of the label, artists such as The Junkies from Toronto and Layton Giordani from New York, prove techno is winning a place in the heart of the new generation of artists coming out of North America.

(uk)Sounding the promise of long days ahead and late nights to follow with its opening salvos, Chloé’s The Dawn heralds the return of the Paris-based DJ and producer, and a new dawn in her ever-evolving career.

Indeed, The Dawn is her inaugural release on her own label Lumière Noire, which she recently set up as a separate entity – after using the name for a collection of releases over the last few months, and of course for her infamous Rex Club night, which has since 2014 become a bit of a club house for Parisian electronic music fans.  Operating Lumière Noire as a fully-fledged label will enable Chloé to release a new full-length album (of which The Dawn is the lead single) sometime in the next few months.

Over the ten-plus minutes of The Dawn, a spoken-word track languishes over melodic washes in a dramatic progression that evokes a novel, or noir-ish cinema – a method that the producer has taken a shine to since Take Care. This cultivation of the strange and the beautiful has become her calling card, putting her in a league with likeminded producers, who take the basic tenets of techno and inject them with their own singular poetic visions. A visual-arts analogue could be found in Noémie Goudal’s photographs which grace the EP’s cover as they will Chloé’s upcoming releases.

This stirring aesthetic gives The Dawn a slightly cerebral dimension, which is taken to new depths by Dixon’s stubbornly technoid remix. The Berlin-based whiz kid, who has over the last few years risen to the top of the international electronic music scene, inverts Chloé’s light-drenched, full-bodied production into a tense, captivating chiaroscuro.

The Dawn can also be explored via the “Chloé * IRCAM V2: The Dawn Interactive Mix” installation, which embodies Chloé’s music as an intimate interactive experience. It is one of the first offshoots of a constantly mutating collaboration between Chloé and the IRCAM Institution (www.ircam.fr/) that began in 2015.

@EtappKyle’s first full Ostgut Ton EP release sees the Ukrainian-born, Berlin-based Berghain resident emphasizing the connection between spaces, while avoiding Techno’s overt intergalactic clichés. By partially linking to his ‘Continuum EP’ (Unterton, 2016), the results are four tracks of pristine, sci-fi minimalism, propelled by Ambient synths and percussive explosions in distant skies – more utopian than dystopian.

Peter Van Hoesen presents Uncovered 2008-2018 Vol. 1-3 - a three-part, 52 track compilation documenting his sound over ten years of the beloved Time To Express imprint. Consisting of Peter's unreleased tracks, rediscovered sketches and material from his live shows, Uncovered offers a coherent overview of his creative process during this period, deconstructing his inimitable aesthetic across three distinct volumes.

With the launch of Time To Express in 2008, Peter created a platform to explore the niche he had become increasingly drawn to - a sound that brings us from sweltering warehouse raves to the misty mountains of Japan, tracing the universal effects of psychedelic sound design and swirling, hypnotic techno throughout a global underground.

Whilst listening back to his old material, it became clear to Peter that this ten-year period formed its own chapter in his discography. Of the three volumes, each one chronicles a different aspect of his sound and can generally be separated into Vol. 1 consisting of ambient works, Vol. 2 of slower bpms and Vol.3 offering faster techno and breakbeats.

By assembling this into a compilation, he consolidates a formative phase of his artistry to paint a detailed picture of his musical approach during this period.

Time To Express will continue to cater to the most discerning techno fans, but with this compilation Peter extends an invitation to understand an important period for himself and the label, and in doing so, clears the way for new territory to be explored.
