Az egyik legismertebb és leggyakrabban feldolgozott ballada a “Geordie”, amely nemcsak Angliában, hanem Skóciában és a brit szigetek más részein is elterjedt. Bár változatai léteznek, a ballada központi témája egy fiatal férfi, Geordie, akit igazságtalanul vagy szerencsétlen körülmények között halálra ítélnek, és szerelme, aki mindent megpróbál megtenni, hogy megmentse őt.
  A legismertebb változat szerint Geordie-t, aki néha nemes, máskor egyszerű nép fia, letartóztatják valamilyen bűn (gyakran orvvadászat, lopás vagy zendülés) vádjával. A dal középpontjában a szeretője vagy felesége áll, aki lóháton vagy gyalog Londonba siet, hogy kegyelmet kérjen a királytól vagy az uralkodótól szeretett férfinak.
A “Geordie” eredete akár a középkor végére is visszanyúlhat. Egyes források szerint a dal történetének alapja valós esemény, amely a 16. században történt. Egyes kutatók úgy vélik, hogy a ballada egy Sir George Gordon nevű nemesember halálára utal, akit 1554-ben kivégeztek. Más verziók szerint Geordie karaktere inkább szimbolikus, és a dal a társadalmi igazságtalanság, a szerelem és hűség örök motívumait dolgozza fel. One of the best-known and most frequently performed ballads is the “Geordie”, which is not only popular in England but also in Scotland and other parts of the British Isles. Although there are variations, the central theme of the ballad is a young man, Geordie, who is unjustly or under unfortunate circumstances sentenced to death, and his lover, who tries everything to save him.
In the best-known version, Geordie, sometimes a nobleman, sometimes a commoner, is arrested on charges of some crime (often poaching, theft or rebellion). The song focuses on his lover or wife, who rushes to London on horseback or on foot to plead with the king or ruler for mercy for the man she loves.
The origins of “Geordie” may even date back to the late Middle Ages. According to some sources, the story of the song is based on a real event that occurred in the 16th century. Some researchers believe that the ballad refers to the death of a nobleman named Sir George Gordon, who was executed in 1554. According to other versions, Geordie's character is more symbolic, and the song deals with eternal motifs of social injustice, love and loyalty.
