Misalignment Of Notes

The Mermaid of Zennor is a piece of mystical beauty. It is directly inspired by the legend of the same name from the ancient Celtic land of Cornwall. Zennor is a small village that is in the far west of Cornwall. The beautiful village stands majestically near cliffs that quickly descend into the sea. The ancient Church there, St. Senara's, harbors an equally ancient and mysterious tale. Here is the tale as told by late Cornish bard/singer, Brenda Wootton:
"The magic land of West Penwith lies to the far south west of Cornwall, and on the north coast there lies a little village of Zennor. In the granite Church there sang a young man, and his name was Matthew Trewhella. He came from Towednack, and one Sunday there came to the back of the Church a lady... and she was dressed in black from top to toe... and she was a mermaid. She came to him and whispered in his ear and said, "come away with me, Matthew Trewhella, and live beneath the sea... and you will never ever die..." Four Sundays in a row the mermaid came to Matthew Trewhella and she whispered, come away, Matthew... and after the fourth Sunday, Matthew Trewhella was gone... under the sea with the mermaid. So... young men... beware of the mermaid of Zennor..." (Cornwall the Land I Love, BBC, 1981). 
Not only was I was profoundly moved by the story itself, but I was also rather bewitched by a song written about this tale sung by the late Cornish bard/singer, Brenda Wootton. My composition truly began the moment I heard Brenda sing the song in her pure silver voice. Later, I visited Zennor, and that only furthered my mission to write my own piece inspired by this all. The Church in Zennor is incredible and it also holds a relic of this story... a 15th century wood bench that features a carving depicting the mermaid herself. In this carving she holds a mirror in one hand and a comb made from fishes bones in the other. Matthew Trewhella really did exist, you know...? That together with this bench makes one wonder... did this really did happen? Well, in a land as rich, special, ancient, and magical as Cornwall, perhaps anything can happen... Do you believe?
