One of our favourite days of the year at Refuge Worldwide is the Friday bank holiday in April, which, since last year, we have dubbed “B2B day”.

From 10 AM to 2 AM, we celebrated new friendships and musical collaborations through a whole day of all-new back-to-back radio shows. Breakfast show host Nikola started the day in partnership with Bézier, and from there we hosted a full day of joint musical adventure between the station's residents.

(the other half is Tornado Wallace), a duo that have been releasing some of the most memorable downtempo we’ve heard in a long time. Can’t wait to hear their debut album out next month. Q: Thanks for your contribution to our mix series, how did you prepare for this mix, and how would you describe the eventual result?
 
I start with one track and work through the mix one track at a time seeing what works and what doesn’t. I always have a few tracks that I’d like to put in the mix at the start, but most of the time I can never get them to work/fit. In some ways, the tracks pick themselves until I’ve got something I’m happy with.
 
I hope this mix comes across as fun and a bit different if you manage to get through the full hour! It’s full of new records I’ve picked up this year.

Q: Is there a record in the mix that you associate with a special story?
 
There are a few records in this mix that I managed to buy directly from the artists. I’m very grateful to them for getting back to me and sharing stories from back then. To promote her single back in 84, Laine August paraded Kensington in a milkmaid outfit with her boyfriend at the time and a friend dressed as a pantomime cow.
 
A lot of great records have no information about the release/artist so it’s always cool to get further info you can’t get from clicking purchase.

Q: How do you dig for new music? 
 
I’m not the most conventional buyer going, I’ve only set foot in a record store once! I do most my ‘digging’ and buying online.
 
There’s a lot of great music that you can come across on ebay that aren’t yet catalogued on discogs. I have a few keyword ebay searches that I check daily to see if anything new and interesting has been listed. Searches like ‘private press’, ‘private synth’, ‘outsider’, ‘outsider synth’ etc. can help you find cool and interesting things. I buy a bit of everything and I’m a big fan of amateur sounding music. I also browse ‘latest additions’ on discogs which has been working pretty well for me the last couple of months. Still got to take a risk on the blind most of the time though and that rarely works out ha.
 
I’m sure lots of collectors do the same but maybe this is interesting to some people.
 
Q: One record you will never let go, one that doesn’t want to leave your waitlist and one guilty pleasure?
 
I don’t think I’ll ever sell my copy of The Wandering Magi. I ended up messaging every record store in Ohio and it took me ages to find a copy! I’m forever grateful to Skeleton Dust Records in Ohio who sold me the record at their listed price. They honoured their original pricing despite the recent discogs sales, I don’t think I could morally ever sell the copy.
 
One record I really would like to get my hands on is Sash – Sash (1988). There are two tracks from it on the cratesLA YT and I’m yet to see another copy come up for sale. Hopefully someone sources deadstock one day as I’ve had no luck sourcing a copy.
 
I have a few guilty pleasure records that are mostly just amateur private press covers. I always try and fit one in a mix, just can’t help it!

With the release of their self-titled debut album, Berlin-based Australian duo a.s.o. – made up of DJ and producer Tornado Wallace (AKA Lewie Day) and singer-songwriter Alias Error (AKA Alia Seror-O’Neill) – fleshed out their nostalgic, dreamy and trip-hop-skewing sound across 11 emotive tracks described as “torch songs for club freaks”.

Across their Sunday Mix, the pair untangle their knot of influences for an hour-long mix that features a selection of music they’d choose to listen to while “trapped inside on a rainy Berlin Sunday”.
