I spent the decade (and more) going to school and trying to cope with fellow human beings …. and there still was this all encompassing being …..  the best mode of survival (at that age, at any age) was identification …..

According to the time on the screen it’s 3:17 a.m.  You look outside.  It’s dark, raining.  You notice that you’re in a city.  You look back at the screen.  A video conference is in progress, and you’re a part of it, but you don’t know who’s who among the nine people on the screen.  Maybe more disturbingly, you don’t know who’s you among the nine people on the screen.  But, you do know you’re… one ninth.  The air around you is dense but you cannot move but you do not try to.  Things too are being said but you cannot hear them but you do not listen… you never listen.  It’s also dark in the room.  Do they see you?  A violin starts playing behind you.
