Multi-instrumentalist and composer Chris Hatfield (not the astronaut....though they have met) escaped the Michigan peninsula after getting his master’s in music and hauled cross-country to Oakland, California, where he lived on an old commune site, complete with an abandoned bomb shelter. He’d left his former band (Mt. Pleasant’s Those Transatlantics) to focus on Love Axe in earnest. At first obsessively writing and recording thirty-some songs amid the Redwoods by himself, he soon grouped up with guitarist Erik Cline, bassist Joelle Barrios (Pagan Saints), and drummer Mike Ambs (Burning Brides, Marah), which is the current and permanent lineup for Love Axe, now based in Los Angeles.

The character of Love Axe resides in a pop-music space with melodies and transitions that ring with a composer’s artistry—these songs are too advanced to be pop, yet they are, and they’re really catchy. And throughout, there’s a scratch at the darker side, like a charmingly apocalyptic OKCupid profile. Their second full-length release, South Dakota, is the culmination of pop, psych, and golden-era indie influences. Beginning with tracks like “Only Gonna Tear You Apart” and “Such a Waste of a Good Thing,” hooks and riffs reflect influences from Spoon and Sloan. “Please” and “All That’s Gold Will Turn to Black (Part 2)” turn to a gravediggers chorus of Ween-worthy funeral-folk, while, later, softly anthemic love songs declare, “The past is full of strange, evil things that can’t be blamed for your deeds.” Setting South Dakota apart is its focus on the artistry, instrumentation, and production, a painstaking process that yields an album to dance to on your big romantic date at the apocalypse.

Matthew Jared is a Singer-Songwriter, and Performance artist based in Los Angeles, California. Growing up playing musical instruments such as saxophone, clarinet and guitar, his ear for music developed at a young age. His vocal style is heavily influenced by Contemporary, Jazz, Gospel, Rock, Country, Hip-Hop, Pop, and especially Soul. Some of the current artists/musicians he admires are Frank Ocean, Brandy, Cold Play, Robert Glasper, and Anderson Paak, to name a few. Matthew has had the opportunity to perform around the southern east coast, southern California and, internationally, in Japan. He has also written multiple songs for movies on American television.

The New Story of the Mad Monks:

This is the way the world begins, not with a band but a whimper...

Deep in the emptiness, nothing stirred for ages.  Blackness, or was it whiteness, protruded eternally and none were there to witness that which was not.  In The Abyss, a hum quietly erupted and laid waste to the illusion of the void.  It seemed we were not alone after all.  Reaching beyond this electric illumination, a single finger tapped out a fretted note as if to say, "Join us in awakening."  It was not long before the others gathered, rapping upon warped metals and seducing swells of harmony from their long silent homes.

Less Dramatic Bio:

Mad Monks formed ages ago, in 2006.  Heavily influenced by early seventies prog-rock and blues, the quartet coalesced in the shape of drums, guitar, bass, and keyboards.  The group experimented for a long time using King Crimson and Hendrix as launching pads to solidify the chemistry of the group.  The music of the Monks quickly evolved into the highly structured psychosis that we have all grown to love.

In 2008, keyboardist Jon Barder left to pursue other interests (life), and the Monks reverted to a trio.  As a three-piece the monks again refined their sound, writing and editing old and new compositions until it was perceived that recording was necessary.  In September of 2010, Mad Monks hit the ground running with the aid of Luke Tweedy at Flat Black Studios and recorded their first album.  Ten tracks were interwoven and laid down to create a single artistic picture.  This mixed material was then sent to Carl Saff Mastering in Chicago and the album is due to be released in January of 2011.

During the recording process, certain melodic ideas were explored that required a fourth party to replicate live.  In the hopes of recreating the sound the Monks achieved on this first album, they decided the time had come to officially enlist another member.  In November of 2010, Sage Satterfield was ritually inducted into the Monastery, and the current Mad Monks were created.

Our influences are: King Crimson, Pink Floyd, Hendrix, Captain Beefheart, Alice in Chains, Soundgarden, etc.

In New Orleans, Sabbath Crow started up in 2005 with drummer, Collin Rooker (Joe King Carrasco, 9th Ward Marching Band, Life Without Elvis, Krewe of the Rolling Elvi) until Hurricane Katrina. 

Moved to Austin, TX, played with drummer, Ric Furley (Junior Brown, Two Hoots and a Holler) from 2006 - 2011. 

Current drummer is Jeff Chavez (former High Divers, Dixie Waste, Dresden 45, Condemned Unit) from 2011 to present.
