Aria is a song I wrote particularly for contemporary dance, for Jack. 

The song begins by building many parts. Each one that comes in sits slightly different from the rest both in the mix, melodically, and rhythmically. This was meant as an open playground for the dancer to choose from any of the textures or layers that feel interesting to them.

The middle of the song pivots sharply with an extended hold for silence before a voice comes in. The voice is accompanied by a vocoder, so chorus of synth parts support it. Even then, it is meant to be obscured, forcing the listener to search for the repeated mantra:

"I was not set in motion; I was the motion. 
I was not set in motion; I am the motion."

The drums and percussion come in calmly but continue to build, following the lead of the voice and the theme of momentum. By the time the bass comes in we can hear all parts at their strongest, only for everything to drop out (even the dynamics continually in motion). 

We return to only one of the ambient pads from the beginning, this time accompanying one solo voice, another reference to the title's etymology.
