Evelyn Coulson was born Evelyn Crystal Hemming in 1917 in West Dulwich. Her family had previously been living in High Garrett. They moved to Franklyn's, Barrack Lane, Great Waltham with Evelyn in c. 1932, though she was then boarding at Princess Helena College, Ealing.

She married her husband, Richard Coulson, in the 1940s. They lived in Sheffield for a time, then Egham, Surrey, before returning to Great Waltham in 1948 to help look after her mother. She and her husband were heavily involved with St Mary and St Lawrence Church, and Evelyn sang in the choir.

The interview was conducted by Anne Cowlin for her book, “Halcyon Days of Cod Liver Oil”.
