Macbeth is an opera in four acts by Giuseppe Verdi, with an Italian libretto by Francesco Maria Piave and additions by Andrea Maffei, based on Shakespeare's play of the same name. Written in 1846 it was Verdi's tenth opera and also the first of Shakespeare's plays which he adapted for the operatic stage.

In Act II Macbeth has murdered King Duncan and become king, but plots the murder of Banco and his son Fleance to thwart the prophecy that Banco’s children will rule Scotland. As the assassins lie in wait for Banco outside the castle, Banco sings his recitative and aria “Studia il passo  -Come dal ciel precipita” (Watch your step - How from the heaven falls), in which he warns his son about his feeling of foreboding. The aria’s noble, rich unfolding comes to an impassioned peak just before the coda, when the assassins strike him down but fail to halt his escaping son.

The aria was written for basso profondo (here transcribed for baritone). My attempt had me step out of my comfort zone, both in expression and in range. The piano as always was brilliantly played by Helen Roberts.

Awakening dormant instincts (New Edit)

On my travels this summer I picked up a book of weird celtic short stories, published by The British Library. This one is inspired by "The Fetch" written by Robert Aickman. The fetch is essentially your own personal sea-hag who will come for you (or those in your family circle) when your time is up. You know it's come for you when it looks you in the face; otherwise, it will pass you, it's head at whatever angle so as not to look at you, as it makes its way to the true victim. Aickman's stoic, Scottish style brings out the folk dimensions of the tale to truly horrific effect. Not surprisingly, I've gone for a funereal march!

NEXUS: THE SYNTHETICS

I've been on Soundcloud for six years now and it's been great exploring the work of other artists.  There is so much generosity of spirit on this platform, it's just what you need when most of your music is made solo. 

I started out playing classical and Spanish guitar, then took up flamenco to ease myself away from the confines of musical notation. As a result, Latin rhythms often creep into my music. 

A friend introduced me to steel string and electric guitars just a few years ago and I still find the scope they bring dizzying... but what fun!
