I grew up in a culture where domestic violence was seen as something to be glossed over or discussed in hushed tones, no matter how seriously it impacts the victim. 

"Good women" were supposed to pray for and submit to their abusers, in order to stop the abuse and live happily ever after. And that's what a lot of people still do due to fear of stigmatisation, shame, religious constraints and Stockholm's Syndrome. 

A few weeks ago, a popular gospel singer in Abuja (Osinachi Nwachukwu) died and a few hours after, her husband claimed she had died of throat cancer. Only for other people to start speaking up = Nigeria learned that her pastor-husband killed her. 

My topic about "finding home" for yourself is to encourage victims to define what makes THEM feel safe and happy and go for that. Not an expectation society, tradition or a warped religion foists on them. 

Chioma Nnani writes multicultural fiction for women aged 18+ who aspire to be strong, independent and fulfilled.

Chioma is the author of FOREVER THERE FOR YOU and BECAUSE HOME IS... as well as a co-author of the FEARLESS FIVE BY FOUR BOXED SET.

An LLB graduate of the University of Kent in Canterbury, Ms Nnani also has a Postgraduate Certificate in Food Law from the De Montfort University in Leicester - both in the UK.

She is a UK BEFFTA (Black Entertainment Film Fashion Television and Arts) Award winner for "Blog of the Year", the CEO of The Fearless Storyteller House Emporium Ltd, and lives in Abuja with her husband.

After coming from DV I had beliefs that I was not good enough, would never be loved again, would not have the opportunity to be valued and had no voice to stand up for what I believed in.  Through healing from the inside out I discovered that these old beliefs were nothing but untruths I had become familiar with as my way of life.  When you internally change the way you feel about yourself, open up yourself to the opportunities of self-love, and confidence, self-worth and build a new image around that internally and externally then you can begin to believe something different. We can see or hear things that have happened to others, and we can minimise our experiences, feeling that they are not that bad - very easily - you may not even realise you are holding trauma in your body.

You may not consciously be aware of any heaviness, however try this . . . think about the word SHAME or GUILT (there are many other trigger words) do you have a sensation anywhere in your body? (this feeling / sensation is trauma) Many people even hold trauma in their body form childhood.

When bad things happen - we hold the burden of it in our body in nature, for instance, when a deer is chased by a lion and it gets away, you will see the deer shake its body - it is actually shaking off the trauma. Humans are not born with that skill, we store trauma in our body. It can over time, actually cause (create) illness in our body, not only that it can affect how you relate with others on a daily basis.
