Las llamaban Carnyx, (en plural Carnyces), palabra que contiene la raiz carn o cern, como el dios Cernunnos (el cornudo). En realidad esta palabra es de origen latino, y desconocemos cual es el nombre galo del instrumento. Es más, los galos soportaban la tortura antes de revelar ese nombre, asi que no ha llegado hasta nosotros.
