Five years after his last album release Luke Slater returns to Ostgut Ton with a new Planetary Assault Systems longplayer, titled Arc Angel.

After 22 light-years Luke Slater’s Planetary Assault Systems keeps exploring space and time with different musical means. Staying true to the project’s initial mission statement, Slater comments on the new yet familiar musical direction: “For me music has to go forward. I’d feel I was cheating by sticking to tried and tested formulas. There’s a valid use for these, but this album has its own agenda.” With Arc Angel, Planetary Assault Systems departs to new musical frontiers by focussing on melody, but staying rooted in the purist values of Techno that Slater shaped over his decades- and generations-spanning career.

Illusions of Power is about political corruption, the collapse and seizure of control, sparring nations, war, drugs, gangs and the fraudulent, media systems that spin it all into rolling, fear-mongering 24 hour loops. Illusions of Power is about the horrors of the modern world and a humanity haunted by its bloodied past. But as every long dark tunnel comes to an end, Illusions of Power too has its glimmers of hope.

Written with an arsenal of hardware gear from the Londoner’s studio in Berlin, Dax J’s Electric Deluxe debut is a militant, yet atmospherical dancefloor assault. As he has proven over a slew of EPs for EarToGround Records and labels like LDNWHT, Deeply Rooted, Clergy and his own Monnom Black label, his sound is a compelling and thoroughly contemporary one. Dax J’s productions are typically mercurial, informed by the past and fortified with a wide range of influences from acid and ambient, to jungle and drum & bass. His EPs are rich, kaleidoscopic ventures involving an array of tempos and moods, and Illusions of Power is no different.

In “Reign Of Terror” and “Harry The Hatchet” on the A-side, and “Zulu Nation” and “The Quest” on the flip, Dax J flexes sinewy techno muscle in his rave-inciting idiom where the new and the oldschool collide. Then in the angst-ridden “Cartagena Square” (built around field recordings from Cartagena in South America) and dreamy breakbeats of “Breaking Visions” Illusions of Power present two very different diversions from the dance. In one there is light and a sense of relief; in the other, shadowy omens of the world are massing. The future is full of promise, but be on your guard.

Techno duo Slam return once more with the album ‘Machine Cut Noise’.

With the double vinyl album, Machine Cut Noise, Stuart McMillan & Orde Meikle delve into the everyday workings of what makes us human; with life, so to speak, running at the very heart of album. Much of their time is spent on the road, therefore many of the original ideas for the album were created in airports, hotels and wherever the two found themselves inspired around the world. This created a vibe that each track was born of the modern machine itself.

These concepts are quickly prevalent on the album - every track has a singular purpose or energy unique to itself. Whether it’s emotive or programmed, there is a feeling that the way it has been constructed has been paved by the machines that surround us. 

Slam have spread the net in terms of production on this album, basing it around their grander tastes in electronic music with the opening pairing of Inauguration & The Afore Mentioned veering into more dystopian sounds and the likes of Viginti Quinque, Ecclesiastic & Evite providing the harder edged themes in the first half of the album. The haunting sounds of Psalm & Anagram bring tension throughout, delivering shades of the future with buzzing, sombre chords set to static interference before one more peak time burst in Corridors. This allows the duo to close out the album in an exceptionally refined way, with Obstacle curving slowly downward leaving the ethereal soundscape of Fine.

The pair have lately been on consistent form with a highly prolific run of singles and remixes including the critically acclaimed ‘Soma Track Series’, all housed on their label Soma Records which is currently celebrating 25 years at the cutting edge of electronic music.
