Augmented Gamelan at Union Chapel 30/06/12 Part 1

This is an improvisation featuring the electric bonang (small gamelan instruments with transducers driven by Max/MSP).  A long feedback delay layers the sound of the local mosques and passing children apparently surprised by the strange noises.

New setup I'm working on involving four bonang pencon, transducers, an analog mixer, and Max/MSP.  The majority of processing going on here is based on looping, modulation, and feedback.

Bonang Processing

Recorded 23.10.14 in London.  Trying out a new setup for performance in Lincoln this week.  Four bonang pencon (pelog) with input/output transducers, processed and fed back into each other with Max/MSP and an analog mixing desk.

Electric Bonang Improvisation 1

This set was recorded live in an empty swimming pool at the Albert, North West London, June 2013.  The performance took place as part of the No Dark Places festival.

This is a test run of a multichannel gamelan installation at the György-Ligeti-Saal (MUMUTH) in Graz, Austria, April 2015.  Key points in a central sequence were assigned to different parts of the hall; visitors could edit both the sequence and the position of notes.  All sounds were generated using one-shot samples of the gamelan housed at the University of Music and Performing Arts Graz.

Brief Transparencies is a piece for small ensemble and electric bonang: a set of four gong-chimes augmented with transducers, light sensors, and LEDs.  All the sounds are created by stimulating resonances in the instruments - no conventional speakers are used.

While this piece builds on my work with Augmented Gamelan, it is an attempt at departure from references to traditional music.  It relies heavily on chance operations, silence, and slowly evolving timbres.  I have also tried to integrate light in the compositional process in the same way I approach electronic sound - integrated with the ensemble in the performing space (both visually and acoustically), teetering between light and darkness, sound and silence, and playing on various forms of feedback.

The performers are given phrases with loose instructions for timing - sometimes following electronic cues, sometimes deliberately ignoring external events. This reflects the nature of the computer parts, formed of a network of oscillators and signal processing developed in Max/MSP.  Interaction with the computer takes place by shining lights onto the instruments.  The software also responds to sounds in the room, breaking down and recombining their constituent frequencies.
