For over 25 years, John has been a unique force in creative music, as both a respected guitarist and composer. On his latest CD, Earthborn Tales of Soul and Spirit, Moulder, along with other contemporary jazz luminaries that include Donny McCaslin (Bowie/Blackstar), Marquis Hill, Paul Wertico and Steve Rodby (Pat Metheny Group) take listeners on a pilgrimage that evokes soul and spirit. In a Chicago Tribune review of Moulder’s performance at the Green Mill Jazz Club (weekend of Jan. 6 and 7, 2017), Howard Reich described Moulder’s work as “a musical narrative, offering portraits of inspiring 20th century figures such as Ruby Bridges, Thomas Merton and John Coltrane.” Further, Reich writes, “Moulder played his most galvanic solo of the evening’s first set, the ferocity of his sound matched by the velocity of his passagework. This was guitar virtuosity with a purpose—not to impress an audience but to articulate catharsis.”
