Aaron Rutherford’s sound resists easy categorisation falling somewhere between left-field techno, trance, deep house and Italo. Having released EPs on Sulta Selects and Hot House Records, heard his tracks on Radio 1 and played support slots to industry heavyweights like Paul Woolford, Mella Dee, Jasper James, Brame & Hamo, DJ Seinfeld and HAAi, he now has his sights set on the clubs and festivals of Europe — and beyond.

Hailing from Manchester — home to 808 State, the Chemical Brothers, Autechre and the Hacienda — Rutherford was in good company when he first envisioned a career in electronic music. While studying at college his teacher encouraged him to try his hand at music production, which naturally led into learning how to DJ. By the age of 18 he was a regular at Warehouse Project parties underneath Piccadilly Station, experiences that began to shape the sound he’s still exploring today.

Like the city of his birth, Rutherford has always embraced rave culture, and he cites early trance records, Brame & Hamo, Hammer and Bicep as influences on his sound. Emotion, propulsive energy and a subtle, spine-tingling psychedelia are among the key pillars of his music, exemplified by the powerful ‘Lost Consequence’ and driving ‘Forgotten’, two of Rutherford’s first ever productions, ultimately signed and released on Denis Sulta’s record label Sulta Selects Silver Service.

Meeting Denis Sulta was an act of fate. In 2019 Rutherford was working in the sound team at Creamfields festival, but was gutted to miss Denis Sulta’s set as it clashed with a shift. Then on his way to catering he bumped into the superstar DJ and the two got talking. Two days later Denis Sulta downloaded both ‘Forgotten’ and ‘Lost Consequence’ and, unbeknown to Rutherford, spent the next two years playing them in his sets around the world. Denis Sulta eventually signed the two tracks to his label and asked for one more — the massive ‘Remember When’ — to complete the EP, which dropped both on vinyl and digitally in summer 2022.

Having since heard his tracks played at Glastonbury, Creamfields, the Warehouse Project, DC10, Amnesia, Kappa Futur and Exit Festival, the Remember When EP has proven to be a catalyst in Rutherford’s burgeoning career. The record’s followup Changing Contrast, four tracks of pulsating, highly emotive dance music, came late last year on DJ Haus’s Unknown To The Unknown sub-label Hot Haus. Followed up by ‘Weird Alchemy’ on Dusky’s legendary label 17 Steps.

2022 was also the year Rutherford established himself on the DJ circuit, rubbing shoulders with some of the biggest names in the game. Following bookings at clubs like Mint in Leeds, Manchester’s Joshua Brooks and Liverpool’s Underground, last February also saw Rutherford play his first ever headline show with Denis Sulta and Sarah Story at Leeds venue the Warehouse. Followed up by his second headline show with Dusky at Joshua Brooks. With more shows planned, another EP on the way and new tracks coming at an increasing pace, 2024 looks set to be Rutherford’s biggest year yet.
