Kidology London
‘A brief history’
Kidology London is the brainchild of ex Problem Kid Mark Wilkinson, after a string of his own releases on Junior Boys Own, Paper and Azuli Records Mark felt a platform to release his music and tunes from other producers was needed. Keeping with the theme that had developed throughout his career Kidology Records was born. It was during this time that Mark’s ‘Dab Hands’ production outfit took shape. Dab Hands remixed Lou Reed’s ‘Satellite Of Love’, which went into the UK Top 10 in 2004, and released 'Supergood' a cross over hit on Virgin / Ten Records in 2005 followed by ‘DYOT’ an ‘essential new tune’ for Radio 1’s Pete Tong released on Gusto Records in 2006. 
Mark began to run his own parties named after the label and ‘Kidology’ became firmly established as one of London’s strongest & most stylish nights out, Kidology held the fort at Ministry of Sound, AKA and The End, the legendary club The Cross, Pacha London, Plan B, The White House & Cherry Jam amongst many others.  The formation of ‘The Kidology Kidettes' a group of outgoing girls who made the party into a vibrant, colourful affair, was a fun sideline to the labels great music. Kidology’s ethos is about putting the 'party' feeling back into clubland. It's fun, flamboyant and friendly. Kidology parties have a vibe like no other. 
Kidology then went to Ibiza in style hosting El Divino & worldwide tours were an inevitable result, plus the label launched of a DJ mix series named ‘London After Dark’
Kidology nights began to regularly spring up across the UK in London, Bristol, Leeds, and Brighton & then back to Ibiza for the summer season alongside Salvacion for every Tuesday @ El Divino presenting a new night called ‘IBIZA REPUBLIK’. Mark Wilkinson was the Kidology resident and played to a sell out crowd in Ibiza town every week.
Kidology London was reinvented as a digital only label in 2010 and released music from 85 artists within a year, producers such as Mark Wilkinson, Danny Rampling, KKlass, Steve Edwards, Redsoul, Andrea Love, Paul Jackson, MJ White, Grace Under Pressure, Danny Marx, the Dolly Rockers and Mikalis have all featured.
In recent times Kidology London have been storming the Download charts on all the best music websites, Itunes, Beatport, Traxsource and Trackitdown have all seen Kidology London releases in their respective Top 10’s. Now with over 120 artists releasing music through Kidology London and the label hosting huge nights at SWMore (The SW4 After Party @ Electric Brixton) and a FREE to members event @ Dukes London on Saturday September 7th this is a great time to be involved with Kidology London.

DJ MIKE MCDONALD CLUB BIOGRAPHY

MUSICAL STYLE:	
Mike’s a house man through and through, but his versatile approach to his
sets means he can adapt to any crowd or club he plays. From funky house,
through to tribal, tech-house, anthems/classics and deep or uplifting
progressive club sounds. Anything with a good, solid groove but an
underlying ‘funkiness’! 
			
“Having a residency means I can stick to, and develop, the sound I enjoy playing which is predominantly house music - funky, tribal, vocal, uplifting, feel good - whatever you want to call i but I always carry a few crowd pleasers and tunes they wouldn’t expect, to mix things up a bit. You have to
give a crowd what they want without resorting to the obvious.”

HISTORY:		
Mike started DJ’ing in 1997 and has played at some of Scotland’s biggest music events including T in the Park (2000 and 2001), the Ministry of Sound Arena at the 15,000 capacity Colours Masters of the Millennium event in Shotts and the IT Arena at Homelands Scotland in 2001. He also hosted the house room at the Radio 1 Big Weekend, Dance Party in Dundee in 2006.

He has played alongside some of the world’s top DJs including Carl Cox, Erick Morillo, Sasha and Digweed, Nick Warren, Steve Lawler, Judge Jules, Pete Tong, Slam, David Morales, Marshall Jefferson and DJ Pierre.

“One of the pioneers of house, DJ Pierre, train-spotting a tune I played at the Colours Masters of the Millennium event was a huge compliment.”

During his 2007 residency at Motion in Inverness, Mike warmed up for DJs including Eddie Halliwell, Chris Lake, Guy Ornadale, The Trophy Twins, Fergie, Tall Paul, Seb Fontaine, Groove Armada and Steve Porter.

“I’ve played over 50 clubs around Scotland … it pays to annoy club managers with mix tapes (as it was then)! They’re not going to come knocking on your door, you’ve got to knock on theirs - hard!”

FESTIVALS/EVENTS:	
In 2000 Mike asked the T in the Park organisers why up and coming DJs weren’t included in the T Break Tent line-up like bands. He was ordered to round up a group of Scotland’s finest local DJs to play that year and they
were swiftly invited back the following year. Up and coming DJs are now a regular feature at T in the Park, and every DJ that appeared in those years went on to hold regular spots at clubs around the country.

“Getting DF Concerts to agree to allow unknown DJs at T in the Park was a massive boost. It gave all the DJs who played a platform to build their DJ careers on.”

BARS:		
Mike has plied his funky house trade at various bars around Scotland. He was resident at Pivo when it was in Dundee, and has played at Bar Bachus and Bar Soba, Glasgow, Bar Brio, Dunfermline and The Gate Café Bar in Inverness. More recently. The Social and Medina in Dundee.

While DJ’ing in Bar Soba in 2002 he was booked to DJ at a private party on a London roof garden, to a 100-strong crowd hosted by someone with too much money! 

“I love DJ’ing in bars. A few beers and playing some funky tunes to an appreciative audience is a great night in my book!”

RADIO:		
Mike is no stranger to radio and has had the nerve-racking experience of playing live on Moray Firth FM’s dance show twice and had his recorded mixes aired. Local station Tay FM also played one of his mixes on the dance show and last year he DJ’d during a two-hour dance special which went out live from London Nightclub in Dundee on the station.

“My first live mix on Moray Firth is still the most nerve-racking experience of my DJ life. Once the first mix was in though, it was fine, and it went really quickly after that.”

MEDIA:		
Mike has contributed to various music media over the past few years including DJ Magazine, Mix Mag, Ministry Magazine and Vibe Magazine in Scotland, reviewing tunes, compiling gig guides, writing club reviews and DJ interviews/profiles and reporting on what was hot in the Scottish club scene.  He has also appeared in a photo feature for Fast and Modified Magazine during an appearance at Blue Nightclub, Inverness in April 2004, and in the local press for various events including his T in the Park appearances.

“Getting publicity is good, but it’s not as important as pleasing a crowd - that’s your best promotional tool.”

PROMOTION:		
Mike partnered another local DJ, Chris Mann, to organise monthly club night Crash in Dundee from 1998-2001, booking local, UK and international DJs. He also launched The Dundee Dance Event which ran for two years in 1998 and ‘99, showcasing local DJ’ing talent that wasn’t getting a chance to shine in locals clubs. It’s still the UK’s biggest event for unknown DJs. Over the twoyears, 36 DJs took part at 11 different venues including an open-air gig in Dundee’s City Square. He resurrected the event in April this year with Bacardi abd Breo being the sponsors and it was a total success with every venue packed out.  Mike helped promote Homelands, Scotland, in 2001, and worked with Soma Records to help promote the Slam Tent at T in the Park for three years from 2000.

“The Dundee Dance Event was an amazing success. It was hard work, but I felt proud at the support it got from the DJs, venues and sponsors - and especially at the amount of people that turned out.”
			
PHONO LIVE HOUSE MUSIC BAND:
Mike is part of a house music outfit called Phono who comprise of Mike
behind the decks playing alongside a sax player, percussionist, guitar player
and two vocalists. They recently played the Belladrum Festival near Inverness

PRODUCTION:

Mike has been producing his own tracks for a few years now and recently
remixed two tracks from local band The Cundeez, both of which were
released on the band’s album. He’s also released a track with studio buddy
Stu Con called Love My beat.

In the music industry, people like Mark Wilkinson are hard to come by. His history reads like a house music bible. Across the globe he’s deejayed in over 65 countries, produced with the world’s greatest music makers, had chart topping success, and shaped half a dozen production monikers along the way; and this is a mere drop in the ocean of his career. Mark’s personality is larger than life, which is why he’s such a success: say ‘Mark Wilkinson’ to most people in the business and nine times out of ten you’ll get a story back about a time when they crossed paths with him…

Since the early 90’s, Mark’s recording career has gained at fast pace and today is still as successful as ever. 

One of his first projects ‘Problem Kids’ was with Rocky from the infamous Xpress2, which saw the kids releasing their music on labels including Junior Boys Own and Paper Recordings as well as becoming resident DJs @ Ministry of Sound 1996-98. Mark, now fully smitten by the music teamed up with legend house producer Paul Jackson to create the outfit ‘Kidstuff’ whose records went onto be signed by the UK’s biggest house label’s, Defected and Azuli Records.

After a string of releases, Mark felt a platform to release his own tracks and tracks he loved by others, was in need. Keeping with the theme that had developed, Kidology Records was conceived. It was during this time that ‘Dab Hands’ was born. Dab Hands remixed Lou Reed’s ‘Satellite Of Love’, which made it into the UK Top 10, released 'Supergood' - a cross over hit on Virgin / Ten Records in 2005 and ‘DYOT’ an ‘essential new tune’ for Radio 1’s Pete Tong which was later released on Gusto Records.

Mark then gave his own name a working in May 2007 by releasing ‘Playground Stuff' on Phonetic Recordings as his first ever release under his own name.
Not to rest on his laurels, Mark runs his own parties named after his label ‘Kidology’, now firmly established as one of London’s strongest & stylish nights out, Kidology has held the fort at Ministry of Sound, AKA and The End, the legendary club The Cross, Pacha, Plan B, The White House & Cherry Jam London amongst many others. Moving forward into 2010 Mark released some great new music under his own name once again, including his remix of a classic ‘Mark Wilkinson Vs Degrees of Motion- Shine On’, alongside collaborations with Danny Rampling, KKlass, Steve Edwards, Redsoul & Andrea Love, Paul Jackson, MJ White, Grace Under Pressure & Danny Marx and with the Kidology London & Ibiza Republik nights going global London’s freshest nightclub brand continued to go from strength to strength.

2010 also saw the launch of a new night, Discodaze, taking Mark back to his musical roots playing 80’s, funk, soul, pop, disco & classic house hosted at the uber cool Shoreditch House & Cherry Jam venues in London.

In 2011 Mark relocated to Phuket Thailand for a whole new challenge, taking on 4 different dance orientated evening shows a week on 91.5FM Phuket Island Radio broadcasting across the island and also to the world on the web.

Few figures in contemporary music have influenced their respective fields the way Frankie Knuckles has revolutionized dance music.As one of the most renowned DJs in the world, Frankie Knuckles is still packing dance floors with his unique style for almost 30 years. Legions of admirers during his travels penned Frankies nickname The Godfather of House the press picked up on it and made it stick.

He has played a pivotal role in the creation and evolution of house music, which has become the dominant staple of dance clubs throughout the world. It was this celebrity and his constant fundraising for some of his favorite charities dealing with aids, homelessness, and education of our youth, that garnered him one of the most prestigious honors by the City Of Chicago.

On August 25th 2004, the Mayor of Chicago proclaimed the date Frankie Knuckles day, and a street naming Frankie Knuckles Way .As a Producer and Re-Mixer, Knuckles lent his talents to some of R&B and Pop musics elite. Artists such as Mary J. Blige, Sounds of Blackness, Michael Jackson, Janet Jackson, Diana Ross, Luther Vandross, Michael Bolton and Toni Braxton. Frankies production and mixing career was officially recognized by the music industry in 1997.

He became the first recipient of a Grammy for Remixer of The Year and has served as a Governor and Trustee, for the NYC Chapter of The National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences.As an artist enjoying the success of two Virgin Records releases, Beyond The Mix and Welcome To The Real World . The first album included The Whistle Song which is most memorable as the Lipton Ice Tea commercial in the mid 90’s.

In 2001 Definity Records released the single Keep on Movin by Frankie Knuckles featuring vocalist Nicki Richards. The new song opened his Mix album Motivation and was the beginning of the collaboration between Knuckles and Richards 2004 A New Reality release. Billboard Magazine writes in the Album Reviews noteworthy section Knuckles strings together an inspirational and spiritual collection of gospel-infused club songs .

With critical acclaim from nearly every Electronic Dance and Club Culture magazine through out North America and Europe. Definity strategic crossover plan launched with a visibility campaign in Major Chains for Black History Month in February. Reviews in Vibe, Ebony, Black Beat, Essence, and BET made this Motivation album the first Def Mix Productions release to garner recognition with mainstream Afro American press.

Knuckles was back in the USA mainstream with his positive message. The launch of his Motivation world tour put Knuckles message again in the forefront on an International level and Knuckles realizes post 9/11 was a New Reality for him. In 2003 Knuckles released an exclusive mix album for Armani AX which also renewed his positive Message, and introduced the forthcoming studio album.He started digging through the vaults and writing, and came up with his first studio album to release in 7 years.

A New Reality released April 2004 in the USA, UK, Italy, Australia, and Japan simultaneously, and continues to receive media attention. Knuckles Launches his A New Reality” Tour on the heals of his Bac N da Day success around the globe. Bac N da Day is the first collaboration in 20 years with long time friend, House legend and co writer Jamie Principle. His second single Matter of Time features Nicki Richards, who is one of the most sought after vocalists in the USA. She works with everyone from Janet Jackson to Stevie Wonder. A breath of fresh air, Nicki is featured on half the album and is backed by some of the most amazing vocalists the business has to offer. She also sings with Will Downing who sings backing vocals for her on What’s Goin On .

Knuckles continues to use his celebrity and much of his spare time providing entertainment for various AIDS charity events. He supports anything that has to do with children, noted as saying I cannot stand to hear a child cry of want, hunger, or a lack of love . He has let his services for many past organizations, including Meals on Wheels, GMHC, Pediatric AIDS, and most recently Harvey Milk School.
