My Great Grandfather and Great Uncle were both signalmen on the East Coast mainline at Plessey - the latter spending his whole career there.  During WW2 my mother and aunt spent much of their time there to avoid the bombing raids on Tyneside and, by all accounts, lived in the style of the "Railway Children". The station and signal box have now been demolished and there's little remaining evidence.
