June 18th, 2012, was Portland’s naked bike ride - which means AirBody’s first show was a year ago. We ended up starting the show an hour late as members of the band joined in with Free Beat Nation to serenade the river of naked bikers that filled the streets en masse and kept on coming. A year later I’m listening to our first EP... writing a few liner notes.
The vision though, started more than a year ago. It could be said it started a couple of years after I moved to the states from Puerto Rico, the summer when I listened to nothing but Led Zeppelin, LL Cool J, Pink Floyd, Doug E Fresh, and the Bad Brains. But maybe it would be more accurate to say that the story begins on a spring night in 2011 at the Songwriters Soiree in North Portland. I had been talking to Andy Sterling about starting a project where psych rock, Latin music, hip hop, and anthemic group vocals were slammed together. I wanted him to take on the role of a drummer but from the perspective of Afro-Cuban and Brazilian percussionist playing electronic triggers and drums. After listening to about eight mellow acoustic songs I decided I wouldn’t play the song I had just written. I walked out on the back deck and told my friends I was going to freestyle a song if they would help hold a beat down. At that point a stranger on the deck said: “Can a join in? I freestyle.” It was Beyond Martin. And yes he does. A few weeks later Andy and I worked out a few track ideas I had; and with help from percussionist Derek Reith, the sound started taking shape. With three or four vague tracks we called Beyond in to MC. It was the beginning of AirBody.
I would like to thank all the

Derek Reith who was instrumental, pushing us to play way before we were ready and
booking all our first gigs. Thanks to Jennifer turner for all the help engineering, editing drums and playing on this record! Thanks to Cory Gray for being super creative and great to work with in the studio. Thanks to Beyond for having the presence of mind to move the through the challenges inherent to an intense artistic relationship. Thanks to Donna Oefinger and Todd Brighthaupt for inspiring me with their dancing, being supportive and putting up with all the recording and practicing in the house!
I would like to thank my mother and father who gave me more than I even know. And entire family which I constantly carry in my heart - especially my brother Alberto who has always been incredibly supportive of me even when it made no sense.
