When we started throwing our Dancing On The Charles parties next to Boston’s most famous river back in 2008 we had no idea it would become the inspiration for a now annual music compilation showcasing the immense talent of Boston's electronic music producers. In fact we had no idea we’d ever even have our own record label! Yet, here we are in 2014 proudly presenting the second edition of DOTC. A collection of music embodying the spirit and persistence that once fueled those epic riverside summertime parties and continues to guide the Boston dance music scene.

Dancing On The Charles Volume 2 picks up where Volume 1 left off and features an even more diverse range of music. An overall deep feeling is this years’ theme as we dive into a 13 track selection from repeat contributors and new Soul Clap Records recruits. Returning to the comp is quickly rising deep house talent Caserta, our favorite afro-funk producer of 2013, Bosq (who has teamed up with us, Soul Clap), Bon Jonson (this time appearing as Nightriders AND Peyote Purple), Tate Masimore aka Chas Bronz (who presents his new project The Sheffield Boys with young guns Smeed & Suspence), and of course the smoothest of the smooth Roldy Cezaire. New artists include: Boston tech-house staple Tamer Malki, former Phoenix Landing resident D-Lu (this will be her very first release!), disco-connector Serge Gamesbourg and all around disco dude Brenden Wesley, Tuck Diggz (working alongside Mystery Roar) and new Boston transplant James Cook who we've been following since his college days and are finally getting out on our label!

Time flies when you’re having fun. Six more years can blink by and who knows where we’ll be. One thing’s for sure, we’ll never forget where we came from and Dancing On The Charles Volume 2 is our latest tribute to our hometown.

A match made in groove heaven, both acts have long-since established a pedigree for timeless tracks. Complementing each other’s sonic sentiments like well-tailored suits, the three men initially collided in a Barcelona studio late last year. They enjoyed such a creative spree there’s a wealth of material about to come our way. And it starts here with these three seismic slabs of deep, rolling gold. Press play…

“Uniformal Processing” purrs with dub science. Once we’ve acquainted ourselves with the rolling techy drum dynamic, we’re introduced to an array of elements… A harrowed, heavily-processed vocal sample, eerie subtle synth textures and a bassline so rich in warmth and weight it initiates an organic swing that hypnotise any dancefloor within a five mile radius.

The theme of hypnosis is maintained throughout “9th Configuration”. Deeper, darker and more dramatic than the title track, it’s built on a bedrock of silky, slinky, detailed percussion and progressively builds by way of a dominant riser and sincere sub bass penetration. Through the darkness a shimmering arpeggio takes hold. Rippling and wriggling amid the elements it’s a quintessential balance of shades that twists, turns and teases throughout the eight minute adventure.

Last but definitely not least we hit “Something Happier”. Living up to its name, it departs from the heavier tech flavour of the previous two tracks and shuffles with a groovier, bass-led swing and a more uplifting set of synth colours. The drums gradually build with percussive clarity before we’re dropped into a blissfully light synth refrain which triggers an even funkier bassline twist and more infectious, hip-shaking rhythmic elements.
 
A beautiful way to conclude a beautiful EP. And just in case you need to be even happier… Let us remind you: there is more to come from this next-level partnership! We can’t wait to deliver it.

Up next on Soul Clap Records, the label that brought you the funk and all that stomping to move your trunk, we're smoothing it out with something truly deep. Presenting the break out debut of talented young David Marston. His roots reach back to his city of birth, Chicago, then spread to the island of Jamaica, where he grew up fascinated with the new world of sound around him. Early guitar training and eclectic musical influences exposed him to classic rock, the blues, jazz, reggae and dub; inexorably the emotive power of music took its hold on him. Now he represents the city of Philadelphia and strives to make music that combines varied, contrasting, and diverse musical elements in a manner that is both intricate and elegant. 

We originally took notice of David a couple years back when he sent us "Gruv", a deep saxophone driven bomb that became the A side of the Jamaicalia EP. Then it took over a year for him to feel ready with his next body of music, which included the future Deep 4 Life anthem "I Don't Want", "My Love Will Be Crying" and "Trust Me". For this EP we also have the world premier of Gemini Love aka Crew Love's three headed and two faced monster, Eli Goldstein, Gadi Mizrahi and Nick Monaco, who have gotten together to present a punky, funky remix of "I Don't Want". 

About his EP, titled Jamaicalia, in David's words: 
"Jamaicalia is a marriage of Jamaica and Tropicalia. I first encountered the term Tropicalia as the caption of a photograph taken in Jamaica. Intrigued, I discovered that Tropicalia was an avant-garde art movement that was started in the 1960s in Brazil. The movement came to exemplify cultural hybridity. It encouraged cultural syncretism: the merging of various and divergent artistic influences with the purpose of creating something novel and powerful. I am fascinated by Brazilian music, and the songs that are featured on this EP undoubtedly have strong Brazilian influences. My music, to a great extent, is the result of fusion; it is a creolized music, a pastiche of diverse styles. While my music is not typically Jamaican, Jamaican culture has had a significant influence on my approach to music creation. For me, Jamaicalia is an apt title for this body of music, because it embodies an experimental amalgam of world and dance musical elements."

Andreas Ort, otherwise known as Dualistic, came to our attention through some solid uploads recently supported by Liquicity. Having fired over these two epic tracks a few a months ago, we had no choice but to share them with you! Originally from Germany, Andreas is now based in the Netherlands and has knocked up two massive tunes; 'Brave' featuring Ayve and teamed up with Zazu for 'Beauty'.
'Brave' kicks off with Andreas' signature uplifting melodic textures and a glitchy build-up to give way to a deep rumbling bass and punchy drum lick. Ayve's haunting emotive tones sit perfectly atop this summer roller.
Working with Leiden-based neighbour Zazu for the A/B side, the pair deliver a solid minimal roller in Beauty. Opening with a reserved half-time intro, the track builds slowly into a cliff-hanging drop which doesn't disappoint. A swelling bassline blends with a solid amen break, soaring pads dressing the high end and a spacey yet simple descending melody to top it all off. Soulvent deliver a solid package in their 15th release, sure to shutdown more than the odd dancefloor this summer.
