Martin Smith M.Mus. FTCL
Martin was taught to play by his father and they both were members of the local Salvation Army Band. At the age of eighteen Martin gave up playing to pursue sporting interests, his career and later, his family.

After a thirty-five-year absence from playing, he returned initially to a brass band and is currently Principal Euphonium with one of the leading bands in the South East. As part of his comeback, he passed his ATCL and LTCL, both with distinction in one year and recently passed his Fellowship at Trinity College London (FTCL).

He has just completed a Masters Degree In Performance at The Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, Cardiff, studying under Dr Robert Childs. Having given up playing for so long he is keen to see how far he can take his musical career and he is very encouraged by the new music written for the solo euphonium for recitals and concertos with orchestras. He has an ever-growing number of public recitals in the UK from St Martin-in-the-Fields, London through to the Town Hall in Lerwick, a packed house at St David's Hall, Cardiff and abroad. He delights in hearing about audience members wanting to follow his example and return to playing or singing!

His recent CD "The Lyrical Euphonium" has been received with excellent critical acclaim and from listeners feedback all around the world. There have been well over a million streams on Spotify and an excellent response 
on other digital channels. In November 2023 and December 2024 his album was featured on BBC Radio 3 Breakfast programmes and earlier that year on BBC Radio 4 and recently on Magic Classical. Martin wanted to capture the popular tracks from recitals and new works that demonstrated how well the euphonium dovetails with the piano in recital.

The Lyrical Euphonium Album was selected as a finalist for the 2023 ITEA Roger Bobo Awards for excellence in recording. These awards are made every two years and were established by ITEA to foster, encourage, and recognize excellence in the field of recording. This award recognizes artists who have produced recordings of the highest distinction, and are given to those whose work illustrates an exceptional level of artistry, regardless of popularity or other factors.
