Jecklin Disk

The creek stopped flowing but there is plenty of wildlife activity in the dawn chorus soundscape in the creek bed of the East Fork of Coyote Creek. In addition to common wrens, finches, and jays, we hear nuthatches, mourning doves, distant quail, acorn woodpeckers, wild turkey, and perhaps a distant cow. We we also hear the roar of distant civilization and light wind at less than 2 MPH.

For this stereo recording the microphones are Sennheiser MKH-8020 on a Jecklin disk baffle.

This is the sound of a Freight Train in a train yard preparing for its trip out of Richmond, CA.

The coots are fishing, and the California quail are getting excited in this 8+ minutes of mid-spring dawn chorus at Mississippi Lake in Henry Coe State Park in California. The gentle wind sounds like a constant roar in this recording at a place and time that the loudest sound is under 45 dB-SPL.
This Lo/Ro stereo mixdown was recorded originally in 6-channel surround with surround and height microphones (suitable as a Dolby Atmos bed). Front mics are Sennheiser MKH-8020 on a Jecklin disk, surrounds are AT-4022 omnis, and the 12' high height mic is the Audio Technica BP4025 stereo, pointed up.
This upload has been amplified 36 dB from the original 24-bit recording level, the loudest peaks are 4.5 dB below digital maximum.

Dawn Chorus at Mississippi Lake, 5:33am on May 13, 2017

A chorus of uncountable insects dominate this later-morning recording at Carman Valley in the northern Sierra Nevada, near Calpine, California. You’ll hear squirrels barking, nuthatches, blackbirds, jays, bees, flies, and an unidentified distant bark. Given a playback system with good high-frequency definition, you'll find the insect chorus particularly intricate.

This was an amazingly quiet place; a person at the scene might call it silent. This upload has been amplified 34 dB from the original 24-bit recording level, the loudest peaks are 4.5 dB below digital maximum.

This was recorded during the 2017 Field Recording Workshop of the Nature Sounds Society. This Lo/Ro stereo mixdown was recorded originally in 6-channel surround with surround and height microphones (suitable as a Dolby Atmos bed). Front mics are Rode NT-1a in an ORTF configuration, surrounds are AT-4022 omnis, and the 12' high height mic is the BP4025 stereo, pointed up.

Mid-morning soundscape, Carman Valley, 9:46am on June 24, 2017

Amidst the background noise of two busy highways and a small airport, all occupied by vehicles with ineffective mufflers, a coyote chorus erupts in Sierra Valley at 5:17am on June 24, 2017. Toward the end, a Sand Hill Crane “audio-bombs” the scene.

As you'll hear in another clip from the same recording, the Sierra Valley marsh is a noisy place filled with many bird species, livestock, and motor vehicles. But the wildlife diversity in this place makes it hard to pass up as a nature sounds recording site.

This stereo recording was made with a pair of Sennhieiser MKH-8020 omnidirectional microphones, mounted on a Jecklin disk baffle.

“Senur” first chapter.

In 10th of February 2013 I recorded a concert with Amateur symphony orchestra. 
The program contained a wonderful melody “Senur” composed in four chapters by Sigurður Sævarsson. It was composed for string orchestra and obo. Both the orchestra and the soloist, Guðrún Másdóttir, played it flawless. 
I was pretty happy with the recording result, even though the concert hall (a church) sounded terrible for recording. It has a very harsh sound and difficult peaks in some resonance frequencies. 
Over the orchestra I used a Jecklin disk with a double pair of mics, parallel MKH8020 and MKH20 in 45°+45° (see following picture). 
Close to the soloist was a pair of MKH8040 and far behind in the hall was a pair of SE4400a with spaced Omni (70cm). 
 
Past months I have got a few emails where people ask me for a sound sample with my Jecklin disk. So this is it. Hereby is the first chapter of Senur. The only post work I do for this Soundcloud work out was turning off MKH8020 on the Jecklin disk and the SE4400a far behind in the hall. Then I increase the gain of MKH20 on the Jecklin disk about +8dB

Recorded at the approach end of the Reading Air Show with a Jecklin Disk using two Audio-Technica AT4022 microphones and a Sound Devices 702 recorder.  This is a rare opportunity to hear B-29 bomber performing a high speed low-altitude fly-over.  

This is very close to what it must have sounded like to the Allied prisoners of war who were starving at the Omori prison camp in Tokyo, when suddenly a B-29 flew low over the camp.  Many spirits were revived on that day for sure.

Recording levels were set with minimal gain in order to hopefully eliminate any clipping.  The sound is best heard with wide-range monitors turned up slightly.  If the lapels on your shirt flap during the fly-over you have the sound level set about right.

Recorded at the approach end of the Reading Air Show, three B-25 mitchell bombers, (Briefing Time)(Yankee Warrior) and (Panchito), perform a low-altitude fly-over.  Recorded with a Jecklin Disk using two Audio-Technica AT4022 microphones and a Sound Devices 702 recorder.  The recording gain was turned down in an effort to avoid clipping.  When listening, you should increase the gain on your system.  Wide-range monitors, good speakers, or headphones are best to realize the feel of the sounds.

The 16th of February 2021 Etna volcano gave a great demonstration of it's power. My house lays at 30km, more or less, from the top of the volcano, this is what it sounded like from my room.
