My first instrument was the accordion. My mom loved Lawrence Welk and wanted me to play like Myron Floren. I was not a fan of either of those gentlemen. Now I’m sorry I didn’t keep up with it. 
I began playing guitar around 14 or 15. My little brother got a guitar as a gift but was not interested in it so I stole it from him and strung it lefty since I am left handed and thought that was the way it should be played. I learned a lot of folk songs back in those early days – Kingston Trio, Limelighters and Bob Dylan. I used to play at parties even though I really sucked but I figured out that girls liked it and I wanted to preform for them. 
My first gig in a band was as a harmonica player – “Spider Jim’s Blues Band” I also got to play rhythm guitar on my new Sears electric. I really focused on learning some leads because my new heroes were Mike Bloomfield of the Butterfield Blues Band and Jeff Beck of the Yardbirds. 
We played clubs in Newport, Costa Mesa and Santa Ana. 
The first band I got to play lead with was the Word. We did mostly soul music covers. When the lead singer, Rusty, flipped out and ended up getting 5150d the bass player and drummer and I formed a power trio. We weren’t really that good but we did get to open for the Grateful Dead in Long Beach at the Bank back in ’68. 
After a short stint of College at UCSB I went back to Orange County and played in a few jam bands. 
I got tried of the OC scene in ’69 and moved to the Bay Area. My buds from OC moved up and we got a house in Oakland and started a fairly good originals band called Jim Freedom. We played all over the bay area and had a good following. I was working in restaurants and going to San Francisco State at the time. When I met my wife Nancy the band broke up shortly thereafter – the Summer of Love was becoming the Bummer of Love. 
With the responsibilities of a wife and kids music took a back seat in my life. I didn’t get involved in a band again until the early 90s. I was working at Mudd’s Restaurant where I met Grayeagle and Rick Rick. Our first solid group was called Mid Life Crisis. That band went through a few membership changes and reformed as Soundbyte in 2008. I played guitar, keyboards and harp. In 2013 I left. Challenged with physical and mental struggles I made a major lifestyle change. 
I was approached by Rod in 2015 to form Satchmo’s Ghost. His concept was intriguing to me – a break from the standard rock music I had played all my life – a challenge I am so happy I accepted. It has taken a while to get the players in place but I feel that this is going to be the best group I have ever played with.

Neil Hagge is a musician and songwriter from the San Francisco Bay Area. His music has been featured on MTV, NCIS, Live 105 Soundcheck, KROQ, and the DIY Network. He has opened for The Vandals, Nerf Herder, Y&T, Alien Ant Farm, and P.O.D. He has also performed at the Uproar Festival and at venues such as Slim's, Bottom Of The Hill, DNA Lounge, El Corazon, 924 Gillman Street, Chain Reaction, The Mint LA, and The Viper Room.
