Tamburaški Sastav Ponoć ("midnight" in English) is a tambura band based in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania (USA) with deeply-rooted musical traditions.

Tamburaški Sastav Ponoć, or TS Ponoć for short, plays a wide variety of music from Eastern Europe and the Balkan states. They mainly focus on music from Croatia, Bosnia and Hercegovina, and Serbia. However, you may hear them introduce some Gypsy, Macedonian, Bulgarian, Greek, Hungarian, and Italian tunes along the way. From traditional bećar songs to modern pop, love ballads to furious instrumentals, TS Ponoć will entertain!

About the tambura...

Tambura (or "tamburitza") instruments have been played in the Balkans for hundreds of years. The instruments closely resemble mandolins, lutes, and guitars. The five most commonly played tambure are prim, brač, čelo, bugarija (or kontra), and berda. Each are fretted, steel-stringed, acoustic instruments and are played with a pick.

The smallest of them, the prim (PREEM), is a soprano instrument employed primarily for melody or harmony. Next is the brač (BRAATCH), an alto-voiced instrument twice as large as the prim that is used for melody, harmony or counter melody. The čelo (CHE-low) plays counter melody. Unlike an orchestral cello, it is held like a guitar and picked rather than bowed. The bugarija (boo-GA-ree-ya) is similar to the čelo in size and design; it provides rhythmic chording. The berda (BEAR-dah) is a fretted bass and like the čelo, is played with a pick rather than a bow.
