“Gotta get back, before I can move ahead”. Sometimes you have to remind yourself why you started something in the first place. What first brought on the fever? I remember a cello sitting in front of me at the age of 5. The screechy bow on the string. The end pin dug into the unfinished hardwood floor. The sizzle and pop of the needle on the Willie Nelson records that beautifully spilled out through the rooms of the log house I grew up in, tenderly tugging at your heart and never knowing why or how. The faint sound of my mother, father and sister making beautiful melodies on the violin and cello through the door of the room upstairs. The rhythm of the engine of our old beat up tractor that my god- father Jim would drag around every stitch of our land. The grease. The red dirt. The baritone of the bull frogs. My uncle hipping me to soulful, ethnic music —All things blues, jazz and every point between. Discovering the guitar in a messy dorm room and learning how to bend a note by mistake. It was mere joy. Music was some kind of portal into a world that I wanted to be a part of in a instinctual, almost tribal way. The music was life. The laughter. The struggle. The hurt feelings. The mend. The love. The muse. The way. Gotta get back. Gotta get back to what lit me up. I guess being merely aware of such things can get you half way back, but this album took me all the way back. I hope it takes you somewhere too.
